I'm new to indexing. I'm doing probate records from South Africa. The records list the surname of the person who has died. The image asks for the surname of the spouse, but the records just list the first name. If it is a woman who has died do I assume that the surname of her husband is the same as hers or just leave it blank.

It is difficult to provide an answer without being able to see the batch. But, you can provide the share batch code and get an accurate answer.

To "share a batch" you need to copy and paste, or type the letters and numbers that are in the brackets after the project title with your question or as a comment.

    For example:

    US, Oklahoma—Obituaries, 1963–1986[M3D5-R9S]

The bolded letters and numbers are the batch code.

My #1 rule in Indexing is Never Assume! If the spouses surname is not listed, do not assume it is the same as the other spouse.

From General Indexing Instructions: "• Do not assume the surname of an individual based on the surname of someone else, such as a parent or a spouse, unless directed otherwise in the project instructions."

If you don't know how to find the Project Instructions, the Field Help (purple ? marks), or General Indexing Instructions, please seek help here or in your ward or branch.
