cannot save contact name

When I try to do a Find, it says I do not have a Contact Name. I open account settings, click on edit names and the contact name box is indeed empty. I enter a contact name and click on save. When I try the Find again, it says I have no contact name. I go to Settings again and do not see any contact name. I click on edit and the box for contact name appears, but it is empty. I tried logging off after saving a contact name and logging back on and got the same problem. Very Frustrating. I have been using FamilySearch for many years and have made some contributions, but I have not used it for several months prior to today.

You appear to be describing a problem with the way your browser is set for Cookies. On FamilySearch you may need to 1) clear the cookies settings:

    https://www.familysearch.org/cookies

Once you have cleared the cookies - see if that resolves the issue.

If not 2) check the FamilySearch Cookie settings - You will see 'Cookie Preferences' at the bottom of the FamilySearch page when you login to FamilySearch. If allowing all FamilySearch cookies doesn't resolve it - It may be 3) your browser settings interfering (typically accessible through 3-dot menu in upper right corner of browser - i.e. Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc).

By the way what operating system and browser are you using?

Thanks for the prompt reply, Genthusiast!

I tried resetting the cookies and allowing all cookies. This did not solve the problem. I tried using Edge, chrome, and Firefox. Same result for all of them, it did not save the contact name. What browser settings might be causing this problem?

    I am using windows 10.

I have been using the family tree for several years and I was not aware of the need for a contact name. The comments, notes, and contributions that I added to the family tree did not include a contact name, when I look at them now I see the <unknown> where I assume the contact name should be. Could this be the problem?

Hmmm, sorry my directions did not help. I had a 'similar' issue with not being able to change my FamilySearch Community email address - which is also found in your FamilySearch> Profile> Settings

The issue of not showing the contact name on your previous Tree contributions should be resolved once you are able to edit the Contact name in your settings. Because of the recent account split with FamilySearch and The Church of Jesus Christ - are you a member of the church? If so you might want to try logging into FamilySearch with your church account and see if you are then able to edit the contact name.

For my issue the Permissions tab here in the settings ultimately had to be reset with FamilySearch Community access allowed before I could change the email address. Do you see the FamilySearch Community access there?

Also what level were your FamilySearch Cookie Preferences set for? You can find this in 'Cookie Preferences' at the bottom of the FamilySearch page when you login.

If none of this helps I will need to direct you to Account help - FamilySearch will need to help you 'reset' the account to allow your contact name to change. I'm sorry I wasn't able to help resolve the issue on this first 'go-round'.
