lighten/darken copy image
Done lots of names and this one was the first page that I had to label "NO EXTRACTABLE DATA". It was completely too overexposed to be readable. I wanted to reach up and turn the knob to lighten the image. Is there a way to do that? It broke my heart with all the warnings about erasing all data. If I had a way to save the image, to my computer I'm sure I could "photoshop" it lighter into a readable image!
some of the words were readable but there was just no way I was going to be able to tell a b from a d or other characters they way they were bleeding into each other. Are these names going to ever be indexed? Or, is this it for those poor souls?

I am not at all experienced in indexing but I just looked at a standard batch and on the left hand side there is a tab for TOOLS and one of those is to lighten the image. Hope that helps

When you are indexing a record, on the left hand side you will see an black rectangler bar with 4 symbols in it from top the third symbol down looks like a small box with two lines in it. Click on that button, it will open a window that will allow you to adjust the brightness and contrast of the record image.

When the other box opens, click on on Sun symbol to access the brightness and contrast. Sorry I left out a step when i commented initially.

It would have been good to see the image for ourselves also if you post the share the batch code of the project your question is referring to:
- Just above the toolbar, click Help.
- On the drop-down menu, click Share Batch.
- The Share Batch window opens, giving you two options:
- Copy the batch link, or Share the batch code so the helper can enter it in the web indexing tool and open the batch.
- A second way to find the batch code is by clicking Batch, then About Batch. The Batch ID is the same as the code.
Yea, when you index, you can see information that is difficult to read. Use these guidelines as you index unreadable information: Let's review this article of knowledge:
- One character. If you are unable to read 1 letter or number, use a question mark (?) to replace the unreadable letter or number. Example: H?ndley.
- Multiple characters. For consecutive unreadable letters or numbers, use an asterisk (*) to replace the unreadable group of letters or numbers. Example: Di*son.
- One field. When all of the information for an indexing field is unreadable, mark the field as Unreadable. Click in the field, and press Ctrl+U.
- Entire record. When all of the information in an entire record is unreadable, including the name, date, and any information for other required fields, mark the record as Unreadable. Press Ctrl+Shift+U.
- Entire image. If you cannot read any of the information on the image, mark it as having no Extractable data. In Step 1: Images, choose No, No Extractable Data.

I just reviewed a batch that someone had marked no , No Extractable Data and by adjusting the brightness and contrast I was able to index the batch of 43 names with only 3 or 4 questionable.
So yes those tools really help. sometimes it also helps to reverse the black and white which is also in the tools.
Good luck with your next scary image

Another good help is that on the left hand bar with the 4 icons in it ; the bottom icon will let you invert the dark print to light print and the Light page to dark page and then use the sunshine icon ; third down to adjust it so it is most readable for you. Then as mentioned us the ? mark for one letter and the * key for multiple letters that are unreadable . If you still can't get it there is NOTHING wrong with returning the batch for someone else to try. Some times I have taken 1 1/4 hour to do 60 muster names and don't forget to have your Wrd/Branch Specialist help and say a prayer. It is amazing what you will find. Above all else KEEP HAVING FUN and take breaks.
