Where is Your Last Name From? Brettle
It is suggested that the name Brettle is a habitation name from the village of Brattle, near Ashford in Kent, England; the information coming from the Dictionary of American Family Names. I believe this to be incorrect, the possible origins of the Brettle name are discussed in https://sites.google.com/view/brettle-family-history/brettle-name-origin and Brattle does not come into it.

Hi There,
Thank you for this new feature of Community Family Search. I would like to find out where my maiden name, "Vizcarra" is from?

Julie, there is no new feature of Community. There's just a rather ill-though-out and incomplete old bit on FamilySearch on name origins. It shows up on people's home pages sporadically, generating complains every time. Jack's post is the latest example.
Jack, that Brettle & Brettell Family History name origin page is missing the derivation offered by the source I consider generally most authorative for English names: A Dictionary of English Surnames by P.H. Reaney and R.M. Wilson (Oxford University Press, 1997). It suggests that the surname derives from a personal name, Old Cornish Brytthael or Old Breton Brithael.

Welcome to the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum.
I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...
I gather, that your reference, to the Origin of the 'Family Name'/'Surname', in relation to the "Dictionary of American Family Names", comes from either (or, BOTH),
(1) "Activities" > "All About Me" > "Name Meaning" (and, "Origin")"; and/or,
(2) "Discovery Pages" ... https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/ ...
in/of 'FamilySearch'
IF, such is the case; THEN, ...
'Yes' ...
You are CORRECT ...
Many of us are NOT happy about the use of, MAINLY (/Principally) that reference of "Dictionary of American Family Names © Patrick Hanks 2003, 2006".
That reference, has NOTHING whatsoever, to do with the ORIGINS of my 'Family Name'/'Surname'.
[ Basically, absolutely ... USELESS ... ]
As, MANY; Many; many, of us Users/Patrons, are NOT from the "United States of America" (or, even, "North America", for that matter).
Granted there are, MANY; Many; many, Users/Patrons, who are from the "United States of America" (and, even, "North America"); but, certainly NOT all of us.
Just my thoughts.

FamilySearch
Administration
Furthermore to this post ...
'FamilySearch' NEED to consider, that ...
The "References" used, in 'FamilySearch', in BOTH
(1) "Activities" > "All About Me" > "Name Meaning" (and, "Origin")"; and/or,
(2) "Discovery Pages" ... https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/ ...
NEED to be MORE specific, to the "Nationality" of the particular/individual User/Patron concerned; and, their Ancestry ("Ancestral" Lines or Origins), rather that just to "American" references.
The aforementioned maybe just FUN "Activities" to engender participation in Genealogy / Family History ...
But ...
That Said ...
'FamilySearch' is GLOBAL.
'FamilySearch' is used by Users/Patrons from ALL around the World, from many of the, Countries; and, Unions, all around the World.
As such ...
The aforementioned, FUN "Activities"; and, "Discovery Pages" NEED to reflect the GLOBAL nature of 'FamilySearch'.
'Thank You' in advance.
Submitted for your immediate, information; attention; and, consideration.
Kind Regards.
MAY THE LORD BLESS YOU IN THIS IMPORTANT WORK
Yours Faithfully,
Brett

Julia - many thanks for the Reaney and Wilson reference regarding origins of family names. I will add it to the Brettle family history website as another possible source for the derivation of the Brettle/Brettell surname.
Regards, Jack

My surname origin is incorrect in "Where is your Last Name From?". The Family Search site attributes their source as "Dictionary of American Family Names © Patrick Hanks 2003, 2006" and says my surname is Polish. It is, however, a verified Norwegian farm name, and has more than one spelling depending on who was in control (Swedes, Danes, Norwegians) at any particular time. Is there any way to correct this misinformation?

As Jack Brettle and you have seen, these definitions appear to be from the publication you both reference. I guess the only way any errors could be corrected is by a direct report to the publisher, who could consider your comments when making amendments in relation to a future edition of the publication in question.
Otherwise, FamilySearch cannot make any changes to this copyrighted material and neither, of course, can the original source be changed, now published.
