I am trying to correct census data from 1870. Two children disappeared

The surname of 2 children is different than the household (same mother, different father than head on census report). I changed their names to Burch. Then I changed the spelling of the surname (Wolf to Wolfe) and the 2 Burch children disappeared! How can I get them back? They are on the original census data, just with the wrong last names.

    Hi Debby,

    Thank you for your question to the community. Is it possible that the two children are not listed under the other father and the mother? The children could also be listed as step-children of the father in the census record. The article below shows how.

    If you could provide the name and ID number of the mother, and the children's names, as well as the URL to the census record, it would help. We could then investigate, and offer suggestions accurately.

    We look forward to helping you find the children of concern.

    @DebbyBoutwell

    Perhaps the children are listed under the mother and the first husband. When using source linker, you can change the focus to view other individuals.

    In this case, if the other husband is the primary person, you would change the focus to the mother using the change button on the right-hand column. You would then click the arrow next to the spouse's name to change to the other husband. At this point, the children for that marriage should be available on the screen for linking.

    It is kind of confusing if you have not done this before. Please let me know if you have questions.
