Editing already indexed books
In my recent search for my own ancestors in Tototlan, Jalisco, México, I began to look at page by page in Civil record books starting with years 1868 and 1869 for registered births. I have encountered a hugh amount of errors in the indexing and I started to make some corrections. Here are some problems I encountered when trying to edit;
1) In some cases a father or mother's name was completely left out of the indexing and there is no field to add.
2) A father's name was listed in the indexing, even though the record states this person was one of two witness and the child was a "hijo natural", meaning illegitimate child. There is no way to delete the father field.
3) The child was indexed as a female and clearly record states the child was a male (or vice versa). Again there is no way to edit this field.
4) I also found just a few entries in the book that were completely left out of the indexing. Is there no way to add to the existing index?
I feel that many of these errors made in the indexing is hindering the search for so many, mine included. This is why I began to edit the errors, but many I could not alter because of the above mentioned issues.
I have in the past contributed to indexing and realize that some of the handwriting is difficult to decipher. I am very careful and study the record before indexing and or editing.
I would appreciate if some of my concerns could be addressed.
