Hi everyone,

I am currently reviewing a Samoan birth record instead of the parent's names -do- is in its place. What does -do- mean?

Thanks in advance

Christina

    Hi Chrstina.

'do" usually is short for ditto - meaning, a repeat of the previous.

If you could indicate a name and an ID to help us check, that would be rather helpful please

Hello Christina, First we like to ask for the batch number. It looks like this at the end of the title at the top: [XXXX-XXX]. Next, please go to the Project Instructions. It is an icon on the toolbar at the top that looks like a piece of paper with the letter "i" in a black circle. In the Project Instructions, scroll down to General Indexing Guidelines. There is a bullet about Ditto marks. This is what it might say:

Ditto Marks • If a record has a ditto mark or other sign of repetition, type the corresponding information from the previous record or field. • Do not index the word "ditto" or the ditto mark itself. Other signs of repetition may include the abbreviation "Do" or a vertical or horizontal line. • Sometimes you will have to depend on contextual information to determine whether a mark indicates repeated information from an earlier record or field, or whether it means something else, such as that no information was given for that record or field.

In short, the "do" probably means ditto which means to use the information from the corresponding previous record or field.

    Thanks for indexing!

The General Indexing Guidelines may hold the answer to your question:

    Ditto Marks:

    • If a record has a ditto mark or other sign of repetition, type the corresponding information from the previous record or field.
    • Do not index the word "ditto" or the ditto mark itself. Other signs of repetition may include the abbreviation "Do" or a vertical or horizontal line.
    • Sometimes you will have to depend on contextual information to determine whether a mark indicates repeated information from an earlier record or field, or whether it means something else, such as that no information was given for that record or field

If not, in order to share your batch, you only need to provide the batch code as a comment and someone will be able to see your batch. It is always good to share the batch with your questions!

The batch code is the series of letters and maybe numbers in brackets after the title of the project. Like: [MX7Y-P2G]
