translation of notes
I am needing help understanding the notes for Anna Brita Pehrsdotter - Kung Karls, Västmanland, Sverige - Book 5, page 7. Her and her son Carl Johan are listed at the bottom of the page.

Anna Brita Pehrsdotter moved to Kung Karls at 1832 with her son Carl Johan from Torpa parish where Carl Johan was born. At 8 March 1833 they moved to Arboga parish. Note on the right says that Petter Jägerhan's wife, who lives in Arboga, took her back to church. It means that after birth woman was unclean and needed to go through a ceremony to become a clean again. That ceremony was done by this Petter Jägerhan's wife.

Interesting. I have never come across this before. The above link is when she moves to Arboga. It looks like she marries J P Fagerström and then dies.

Thank you for sharing this other record for Anna Brita Pehrsdotter. Now I need to say that I translated that first note a little wrong. I thought my translation sounded a bit odd because it was usually a priest that performed that purification ceremony.
That first note again: Petter Jagerström's wife was taken into church, he lives in Arboga.
Anna Brita Pehrsdotter married Johan Petter Jagerstöm at 27 May 1833 and then she died at 10 Jan 1834.

That does make more sense. Thank you. Do you think the purification ceremony is what delayed their marriage? Normally they marry quite quickly after posting the banns.

Yes, often people were married soon after banns were published. The purification ceremony normally occurred 40 days after birth, but in case of illegitimate child, mother needed to also have been absolved. There might have been some other reasons for that long time between banns and marriage.

This is very interesting. I have seen lots of women with children born out of wedlock but I have never seen this kind of note. What is the process of being absolved and what does the purification ceremony entail?

There were no one purification or absolution process, it varied quite a bit during time and place. Purification ceremony was for married women. It was held about 40 days-6 weeks after birth. During that time after birth, new mother was considered to be unclean and there were many rules and restrictions in her life and one thing was that she was not allowed to go to church and participate in Holy Communion. When the unclean time period ended, the priest came to the home of the family, read the repentance prayers and blessed her. More often this happened in church.
For mothers of illegitimate children purification process was actually a absolution process and more like a punishment and it usually was done publicly. I will just list things what it could have contained because there were so many differences during time and place.
Mother asked forgiveness from the priest in private or it was done publicly in front of the congregation. She was standing, sitting on a stool or even kneeling or groveling while doing so. Priest reprimanded her with words, it could have contained some physical means like pulling her hair. Mother may have been in stocks outside the church. People may have shouted at her and spat at her. Some times the priest was hesitant to give absolution on the first time.

Thank you so much for opening up another part of the household records to understand and watch for. I have never understood the marks in those sections. As I continued to follow Jan Petter Fagerström ( that is what his last name is on the next several records) I found that he remarried to Brita Christina Malmberg. She has several children born out of wedlock and there was the abs. note. I was so excited to know what it meant. Thanks for teaching me.
