How can I become a helper to someone in our stake?

Use the helper planner. By your name is the ? help menu and one option is helper resources, go to that screen and look for the Add Someone place in the planner area to the right of the screen. You can add someone usually from your stake by using their name and select them but there are other ways if they are not in your stake or a member of the church. Just type their name and send them an email requesting access to be their helper and they must accept. There is also a way to enter their name and helper number (which is last 5 of there membership number or can be found under their settings in their account) to add them. You can do that from the helper resources or when you click help others option right below your name.

Due to the nature of your 'Question' ...
I am "Moving" this (General) 'Question' of yours, to the 'Group' being "All Temple & Family History Consultants", in this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum; so that, the members of that group can answer/assist you.

As you are a Member of the Church; then, ...
.
You DO NOT have to be 'Called' as a "Stake/District, or, Ward/Branch, Temple and Family History, Consultant" to HELP another User/Patron of "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' (be they Member of the Church or not).
.
ANY Member of the Church has the ability to HELP another User/Patron, there are two (x2) Options.
.
FIRST option ...
.
The "Help Others" feature/function/facility - toward the Top 'right-hand-side' of a page or screen, being the SECOND Level Menu.
.
.
The "Help Others" function/facility/feature enables you to basically "Log In" as the User/Patron you are helping.
.
You CANNOT do EVERYTING, that the User/Patrons can do with their Account; but, you can certainly act as their "Proxy" in doing most things.
.
Remember, you basically SWITCH this "Help Others" function/facility/feature, ON; and, OFF, each time you use it - you have to go through the same "Access" process each time.
.
The number that you "Enter" is actually the "Helper Number" of the User/Patron that you are helping.
.
You have to obtain that "Helper Number" of the User/Patron that you are helping, directly from that person you are helping.
.
The "Helper Number" for individual Users/Patrons can be found in an individuals "Settings" (under the "Permissions" 'Tab") in their 'FamilySearch' Account.
.
The person that you are helping will have to look in their "Settings" (under the "Permissions" 'Tab") in their 'FamilySearch' Account to find out what that (Helper) number is; and, then, advise you.

Where it states:
Quote
------------------
A helper number is a unique 5-character number associated with your FamilySearch account. It, along with your username, allows a helper or support person to see your Family Tree and assist you. You can find your helper number using the website, Family Tree mobile app, and Family Tree Lite.
.
Helpers can do everything you can with a few exceptions:
.
- Helpers cannot access or make changes to your profile information.
- Helpers cannot submit feedback or send and review messages on your behalf.
- Helpers cannot see your Settings, Local Help, Training, and Resources page.
------------------
.
Also ...
.
- Helpers cannot 'Sign In' to Help a Deceased User/Patron
- Helpers cannot ADD Comments to Memories
------------------
.
SECOND option ...
.
You can also use the "(Consultant) Planner"; even if, you are NOT a "Stake/District, or, Ward/Branch, Temple and Family History, Consultant".
.
Despite being a "Consultant" in my Ward and Stake, I ALSO use the "(Consultant) Planner" to HELP, Family and Friends, INTERSTATE in my Country; and, those located ALL around the World.
.
The "(Consultant) Planner" ALLOWS you to keep a User/Patron, that you are most often "Helping", in the "Planner" for a period of x12 Months, after which you need to "Renew" the permission.
.
The "(Consultant) Planner" can be found under "Help" (ie. the "Question Mark" in the 'Circle') , down the 'Bottom' of the "Pop-Up" (aka: "Modal" 'Window'); and, selecting "Helper Resources", the "(Consultant) Planner" appears on the 'right-hand-side' of the resulting page/screen:

.
How do I use the Planner to view another person's information in Family Tree?
.
IF, you have any 'Question' regarding the "(Consultant) Planner"; THEN let us know; as, that is another separate "Discussion", better to process one thing at a time.
.
I hope this helps.
