I'm struggling to find Norway christening for my neighbors Norway great grand father, Anton Amerson
Born 11 March 1864. US census gives emigration 1867/1869. 1895 Wisconsin State census, 1 Scandinavian in the home. (I'm lacking the 1870 and 1880 census for him). If this is accurate he was a child when he came to America.
1884 marriage indicates his father is Ole Americion, then named Olie in Anton's 1901 marriage record.
Divorced 1901 and then M
I had a potential match with exact birth date and year, but that individual was eliminated because he stayed in Norway.
Internet site shares another researchers thoughts about Anton leaving Norway (age 7) with an older brother (possibly named August). She says Anton Amerson was named Ole Olsen at his birth but no supporting christening record. http://krobertsgenealogy.com/index.php?page=pages&id=7&fbclid=IwAR2aCEsWHr9c3CiNFsNNxLin0VtgyPMNgMQXHEBstfhTcD4RFB8LBhMgk5E
A quote from the article:
**(Older Brother) Olsen (could the name be August??) -: Antone used to tell this story: "When my brother was 14 and I was 7, my brother took me and we hid on a ship bound for the U.S. When arriving in the U.S., we both worked for an Irishman which worked us very hard, and we did not get enough to eat, in fact, nearly starved us to death.- We were the Olsen boys and there were too many Olsens here, so we changed our names. My name was Amundson (could be mother's maiden name), and I changed it to Amerson. My brother changed his to a different name. (Aunt Carrie)
Any help is truly appreciated.

This is a tough one. Looking for Anton Amundsen in mid-19th century Norway without a geographic location is like looking for a needle in a haystack, especially with all the possible name variants. I found this for an Anton Amundsen Rustebakke on norwayheritage.com. His age is off some but the emigration time frame is a fairly good match.

If that has relevance to your search, I found the same Anton Amundsen in his family in Oppland in the 1865 census.

Wow this IS tough... There have been a lot of people digging into this for quite a few years so there are many paths to investigate and obviously some of them are wrong. Where does the 11 Mar 1864 birth come from? There is another very common date - 26 Feb 1860 used in a lot of trees. Amundsen changed to Amerson is reasonable but Amersen and Emersen are valid last names too. I have a tough time with Ole becomes Anton unless he was christened Anton Ole. Anton Olsen son of Ole Amersen/Amundsen etc seems like it might fit. If you believe the story "a 14 yr old took his 7 yr old little brother aboard ship and managed to hide away"?? Maybe I guess :-) But if they got to America 1867-1869 then Anton is born 1860-1862 and August should be 1853-1855.

I certainly appreciate your efforts. I'm guessing many people have searched over the years and been unsuccessful. I do wonder where the 11 March date comes from so I'll ask my friend what he might know about that. He's young so it's likely been passed down through various family records without a solid source.

I have not investigated the 26 February 1860 date. I don't have a death certificate either. There are just so many variable. 1901 marriage Cert. (to Daisey) indicates father is Ole Olesen.

In the kroberts information/clues page you gave the link to it says "on the birth certificate of Roy Amersons it says Anton Amerson b. 26 Feb 1860 then (another source says 11 March 1864)"
A bit further down there is mention of Anton's obituary on microfilm in Florence WI and it says "Anton was born in Norway, Europe March 11th, 1860"
If we give any kind of credence to the stowaway story it does seem as if Ole/Anton did not emigrate with his parents. A 7 yr old's recollection of the dates and ages might be off a bit but unless the story is just a fable invented for his grandchildren it does seem there should be a young child in America in 1870 with no parents.

In the 1870 census for Moscow, Iowa, Wisconsin (Page 16 of 24) there is a Hndrick (no E) Amerson (35) and his wife Carrie (36) and a 7 yr old Ole Olesen - all 3 born in Norway and no other family members.
That is a very interesting family....

We should see Anton in the 1880 census, hopefully somewhere near where he marries, Dayton, Waupaca, Wisconsin.
