Hello, thank you so much for accepting me into the group. I am interested in searching for records o
My great grandmother was
Bridget Mary 'Della' Prendiville
Birth 14 JUL 1895 • Graigue, Causeway, County, Kerry, Ireland
Death 23 APRIL 1943 • River Grove, Cook County, Illinois, USA
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/memories/LRTH-BVQ
Most of my Irish relatives were from County Kerry, Ireland.
I am interested in searching for records on my 3rd great-grandfather named James Thomas Austin
Birth ABT. 1828
County Kerry, Ireland
Death Unknown
A few generations ago I believe he was sent to Australia because he committed a crime. His original
name may have been Thomas O'Brien? I am uncertain.
When he was finally allowed to return to Ireland he took the new surname of Austin.

Have you tried the website by the Government of Ireland:
Irish Genealogy
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/
.
IF, not; THEN, give it a go ...
.
The website is FREE including access; viewing; and, downloading, of any "Images" of associated Records.
.
The 'link' to that; and, the 'links' to many other websites, can be found on the 'right-hand-side' of this 'Group'.
.
Good Luck.

Civil registrations of births, etc weren't done until 1860s or so, so the above website won't help much. I happen to have a subscription to rootsireland.ie for the month, which has a lot of church records (so does findmypast). When I search on the surname of Austin within 10 years of 1828 in Co Kerry, I only get 1 result and that is for for Elizabeth Austin in 1825. There are a lot more hits outside Co Kerry, but still not many James in that time range. Without another family member name, it might not be possible to know for sure (also, some records aren't available at that time for that location, or at least not yet).

Thank you so much for your help. This is the first time I heard of Elizabeth Austin in 1825.
I have several other records of Austin’s in my family. Here are just a few:
My great-grandfather was;
Francis 'Frank' Matthew Austin
Birth 8 MAY 1895 Chicago, Illinois, USA
Death 29 DEC 1976 River Grove, Cook, Illinois, USA
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/memories/LRT4-GZB
My great-great-grandfather was;
James F Austin
Birth 15 AUG 1854 Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA
Death 23 SEP 1927 Chicago, Cook County, Illinois
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/memories/LDT8-W4F
I believe my great-great-great-grandfather was
James Austin
Birth ABT. 1828 County Kerry, Ireland
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/memories/LRBG-G6Z
But the James Austin above (or his father) originally had different surname before he changed it to Austin. I would really like to figure out what our family’s original Irish surname was.
Thank you so much again for your assistance,
Adam

Because Prendeville is such an unusual last name, I wanted to explore what might be available on the Transcripts of the Memorials of the Deeds, Conveyances and Wills 1708 to 1929 (available on familysearch.org) A Key word search will get you there if you are interested.
Some of the findings for County Kerry (There were some County Cork entries which I ignored)
The first number is the year - The second number is the volume - The third number is the Document number (not the page number)
These don't look really promising in uncovering information about your family; but, with the 'Deeds, Memorials and Conveyances' you never know for sure until you read it.
I could find no instances of the surname Prendeville in any index before the 1870 to 1879 indexes. I began at 1708. It is also good to look again - My search was very cursory.
Maurice & John Prendeville - Maruice Quinlan - 1879-59-190
John Prendeville - National Bank of Limerick - 1884-4-109
John Prendeville - Ireland Bank -1884-27-279
Maurice and Thomas Prendeville - Patrick Cronin - 1883-20-222
John Prendeville - Public Works Commission - 1885-36-236
Edmond Prendeville - 1897-35-39
Joseph Prendeville - National Bank - 1896-44-146
Thomas Prendeville - 1897-35-40
Michael Prendeville - 1894-64-150
Patrick Prendeville - Public Works Commissioner - 1898-89-245 and 1896-65-205
Redmond Prendeville - 1896-65-205
John Prendeville - 1890-49-299
Garret Prendeville - Public Works Commissioner - 1893-19-250
James Prendeville - Public Works Commissioner - 1892-52(?) -128
Simon Prendeville - Pubic Works Commissioner - 1895-40-241
Thomas Prendeville - John Brosnan - 1890-26-187
Thomas Prendeville - Edward - 1891-24-136
Thomas Prendeville - 1895-40-241

Since Prendeville does not seem to appear in the Deeds, Memorials and Conveyances before 1879, and the bulk of the entries include the Public Works Commissioner, it appears to me that these conveyances were the dissolution of land ownership by the landed gentry to the hands of the tenant farmers. For more on this, you may want to read "The Course of Irish History" by T. W. Moody and F. X. Matin p. 240-241. or R. F. Foster's Modern Ireland (much deeper coverage). One paragraph (one book) can't give justice to the plight of the Irish tenant farmer - but these histories are overviews.
