Looking for birthplace of my Danish great-great grandmother Minnie (Minerva?) McHugh, maiden name Th
Hi, I'm trying to figure out which Danish town my ancestor Minnie McHugh, LN8T-ZJ4, née Thompson (possibly Thomsen?), was born in. Per the Ancestry link below, it says she was born in "Shelpy," Denmark, which doesn't seem to exist. I thought it might possibly be Saeby. I also don't see where on the sources (which are census records) it says "Shelpy" so I'm suspicious. As well, I'm not confident that Minerva is her full first name; that doesn't seem very Danish.
Can anyone help me figure out where to find a birth or baptismal record for Minnie, or a marriage record for her marriage to George McHugh around 1901, that has her town or city of birth listed? I also suspect she had a previous marriage, possibly to a man whose last name was Anderson, because her eldest child was born in 1892 (Vere or Elvira) about nine years before she married George, so that marriage record would be helpful too. Both marriages were in Utah. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Meg,
I do not know what the place is but here are some possibilities.
For the first letter combination/sound, you could have sk, ski, skj, or sj
for the 'p', you could have b. So, try those combinations.
I think you should also try the fuzzy gazetteer--the link is off to the right--and type in shelpy in Denmark and see what you get. I tried it and got a number of good hits.

I should add that the ending is probably -by, which means town or village, and is very common in Danish place names. It is also found in English place names where the Danes settled in English. Think of Kirkby (often shortened in the name Kirby), the 'church village'.
now all you have to do is figure out the first syllable. Please let us know what you find out.

After you have gotten several possibilities from the fuzzy gazetteer, plug in those name into Krabsen Stednavnebase--again, the link is off to the right, and/or into the FamilySearch wiki (where's the link?) to find out more about each place name, i.e. county, and so on.

You are right in being suspicious about the name, Minerva. A search in Danish census records for Minerva shows only a handful. Chances are it was a nickname and you are looking for Wilhelmina, Amelia or even Maria.
As far as the last name, the death records for both Louis and Isabelle show Thompson, as does birth record for Katherine (M Thompson).
By the way, the only mention of a Ann Jebison is in Isabelle's marriage application (?) and Minnie McHugh is present at the marriage.
Is there any reason none of the children are listed under Minnie in FamilySearch?
Her emigration is around 1887-1888 it looks like from the census records found.
In the 1910 US census it shows her married twice and George once, with her having 7 children, 4 living. There is not much that points to a different wife for George, especially since Louis later record shows Thompson.
Just found a 1900 census where there is a Minnie Anderson living in Salt Lake City, widowed, with two children: Elvira and Louis, of the right ages, Minnie shows born in May 1868, Elvira (Vera?) in June 1894 and Louis in January of 1899. The parents of the children are listed as from Denmark, as is Minnie. It states she came in 1890. Her husband must have died recently, she is doing laundry to support herself and her children.

Researching the children and adding everything correctly into FamilySearch helps a lot in the searching for additional records online.

Another way to go is to order the Social Security applications for her children. One of the questions on the application is the maiden name and birth place of the mother of the applicant. Three of her children show Social Security numbers on their death records. If they provided that information you should be able to zero in on her birth place.

Megan van Huygen, I believe this could be the 1901 marriage record for your George McHugh and Minnie. She is not named Thomsen but rather Andersen. The date and location are good so we'll give it more study and see what develops

The place is Sk(j)elby, Maribo, Denmark. There is nothing for 4 May, 1868 but the top entry on this page is 14 May, 1868. "Thomine" could have been changed to "Minnie" and the child's father is Niels Thomsen which would work for Minnie Thomsen or Thomson. All this is, of course, speculation but you may be able to follow her in the records and perhaps find if she emigrated at some point.

Thanks, everyone, so much for your invaluable help! The idea of Skelby/Skjelpy seems correct, and my sister has a family tree made by an unknown person that does list Niels as Minnie's father's name, but no sources are listed, so I was trying to stay skeptical. (I found this out a few days ago, since I made the post above.) So Norman, your link seems like it might be a match.
