Why is Anna Catharina Carlgren shown as "Oakta"
Birth of Anna Catharina Carlgren Apr 8 1855 in Sweden, Gävleborg, Alfta parish Shows the mother as Anna Alstren. It mentions a Elias Carlgren but I can't read what it says about him. Anna Alstren and Elias Carlgren were married in 1836 in Gävle. They had several children born there in Gävle. However several of the later Household Examinations show Anna Catharina Carlgren as "Oakta" of illegitimate. On those same later Household examinations, Anna Catharina is listed with her mother, but not Elias Carlgren. There is just a note referring to him above the listing for Anna Alstren. What happened?

In birth record, it says that Anna Katrinas mother was a miller's widow Anna Alstrén.
I have not looked the house hold examination book yet, but there should be a note when Elias Carlgren died.
Could you provide the Household examination book page number?

Page 43 & 69 says dead miller Elias Carlgren's widow Anna Alftrén (not Alstren). Widowed mother with children moved from Gefle (Gävle) at 1852, so Elias must have died between 1848 and 1852

Just found a death record for Elias Carlgren Sept 9, 1851 in Gävle parish. So she came to Alfta parish in 1852 after his death. So Anna Catharina was Oakta. There is no mention of the actual father. But why did Anna Catharina use the surname Carlgren?

In those household records you provided Anna Katharina does not have the surname Carlgren. Do you have any sources where she is not with her birth family and then she has the surname Carlgren?

I just located her in 1871-1875 page 262 and yes she is listed as Anna Kathrina Carlgren. In this case Carlgren is a real family name. So even she is a oäkta, she uses the family name. This is not the usual way. Most common was that oäkta children used their mother's surname. Maybe in this case because mother had been married and had other children with deceased husband, the family and mother was known with the father's surname and then the oäkta child also got the family's surname.

Perhaps only way to try to find out the father is to see if there are court records that mention the father. Not always there are those records. And if I remember correctly most of those court records are not yet digitized.
