How to use Census entries (1865 & 1875) to locate residence on a map
I have found ancestors in the 1865 and 1875 Census records and would like to find the location of their residence on a map. For instance, house 117A, Braaten, Nes, Akershus. Is there enough info there to pinpoint a residence location? If so, how do I do it? What resource should I use? Thanks!

Kurt, you might enjoy this map website for Norway. https://www.norgeskart.no/#!?project=seeiendom&layers=1002,1015&zoom=6&lat=6982578.00&lon=249982.25&sok=B

Great map! Thank you! When I put Bråten into the search field I get 585 locations returned. I can narrow down to the ones in Nes parish (or one of the sub-parishes) but I'm still not sure how to figure which is the correct one that's mentioned in the Census records. None that I've found so far include the house number of 117 or 117A. I've made a cursory effort to look through the neighboring pages in the Census to see what farm names are nearby (assuming the Census was done by an enumerator going from house to house and that the Census was filmed in that same order), but nothing conclusive jumps out at me yet. Do you have any further suggestions? Thanks much! I'm going to keep at it...

Kurt, I'm not of any further help. Sorry. If you found a bygebok it might have a map of the area, just a thought.

Finding the location of an ancestral farm and looking at satellite photos of that farm today is a lot of fum but it can be tricky. Farm names change a bit from record to record over time. Finding today's spelling for a search in Norgeskart can be tricky and since the farm name probably exists in several places in Norway is another challenge.
I assume you are looking at the 1875 census for Nes, Akershus is your given example. The family of Lars Olsen 1796 and Berta Larsdatter 1797 with their son Ole Larsen 1833 married to Anne Gulbrandsdatter 1834. That Løpenr/Bnr 117A is a bruk number in this case. Bruk is a sub-farm of the main farm which is not recorded in this census.
Based on the names in the nearest farms I am fairly certain "your" Bratten is today bruk 2 and 5 of the main Gard #[96 Arnestad]
If you got Norgeskart https://www.norgeskart.no and put Arnestad in the search box, choose the second result in Nes. If you look just across to right and up a bit you will see Bråten.
Search for Kårudvegen 38, Vormsund, Norway in Google Maps

Yes, that is the family in question. I've done a more thorough job of going through the Census entries before and after my family in both 1875 and 1865 records (to find nearby farms) and think I have it figured out. It appears to be this one 6676299.79 302691.67 Thanks much to both of you!

Ah, Clifford, I didn't see your full post. It cut off after the second paragraph until I hit expand (which I didn't do right away). I think we've reached the same conclusion though!

There are Farm books for Nes, Akershus, Norway at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. The call number is 948.22/N1 D2. There is also a very detailed set of maps for Norway at the library that may list the farm. From the map online, I can see there are many sub farms under Bråten, therefore it is probably best for you to check the farm book as it list all the sub farms and the people living there. I can check for you the next time I go to the Library if you can give me the names and dates your ancestors were born and married. The library is closed to the public because of Corona virus, but I have to go there on occasions.

Wow, what a kind and generous offer! The 3 generation family that appears there at Bråten farm in the 1865 and 1875 Census records are as follows: Lars Olsen, b. ~1794-96 in Nes. d. 20 Feb 1876 in Nes. His wife, Berthe Larsdatter, b. ~1795-97 in Nes. d. after 1875. They married 24 Sep 1825 in Nes.
Their son is Ole Laurits Larsen, b. 24 Nov 1833 in Nes. His wife is Anne Guldbrandsdatter, b. 4 Feb 1833, Sør Odal, Hedemark. They were married 4 Jun 1860 in Nes.
Their children are Jacob Christian, b. 30 Dec 1864; Lina Martia, b. 17 Apr 1868 and Axel Gunerious b. 6 Mar 1874. They also had a child named Lars who was born first (10 May 1861) but died young.
All except the oldest generation left for America in 1882 and settled in Wisconsin.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, this was my problem... too many choices! I believe that using the surrounding farm names from the Census records I have figured out which Bråten is the correct one on the map (with help from others on this thread!).

I looked at the call numbers for the farm books you mentioned. I had discovered this entry and was planning to view the copy held at the University of Wisconsin in Madison back in March. Then the pandemic hit and now the library is closed to all except students (when it is open at all). It's good to know that I can hopefully view it myself at some point in future, although you can probably make better sense of it than I, since I have no experience with farm books. Thanks again!
