At the end of the 1800's (about 1880-1900) many families took their father's patronymic as their last lame. e.g. father was Matts Pettersson so children were Maria Pettersson and Daniel Pettersson. Before that about 99% last names which ended as -sson were patronymics and ending with -sdotter is and was always a patronymic.
Soldier names were not always inherited. In some cases when man entered army he was given the soldier name and when died/was released the same name was given to the next soldier and children did not use that soldier name. But often the soldier name became the family's last name.
Merchants, craftsmen, clergy and other upper class people used to have real last names.

In the attached family did I create the proper surnames for putting in FS? The 7th child I have been able to find in other records and put in the names he used. The others I didn't know what surname to go with. Any help to make this more accurate would be appreciated.

Parents and fathers parents clearly have patronymics and they are correct. One note, please do not use word "or" in the name because it is not a part of the name. Choose one spelling (birth name or the most used) as vital name and add other variations as Additional names.
Children 1-6 use Niclasdotter or Niclasson. They did not use Svensdotter or Svensson.
Child 7 Sven Lorentz, Öst is his last name. But did he really use Svensson is records and not Niclasson?
