I would like someone to read this military record to learn what happened to the sons of Hans Christo
This is a copy of the Munkebo Parish(2), Odense, Denmark Military Roll for 1800. I am interested in what happened to these 4 sons of Hans Christoffersen. The 1801 Census of Munkebo says both parents were dead before 1 Feb 1801. I’m wondering if a translation of this record will shed any light on their deaths and where these boys went.

Hello #[gaylaolson1 gaylaolson1] ,
There is so much going on here. I consulted with other Nordic specialists from the FHL to look this over.
We don’t get every word of each paragraph or comment but here is some of it:
Old no. 49/New 41 Søren. Right above and around the name of his father Hans Christoffersen, refers to an incurable illness and receiving a release from duty pass. The comment to the right is Amtspas 30 Oct 1801 to Egense, Fredriksborg Amt. Then we see the word forlover which should indicate a bondsman for a marriage the landowning farmer Niels Hansen of Sindehuus? And then another reference to a Amtpas. Right under 3 De. 1802 or 1803 sea weak (or unfit for service at sea). Right under his name is another thought meaning he is sick with Brak? And then a reference to improvement session 1801, sess. 1800. Then same situation session 1802.
Old no. 50/New 42 Niels has a note, met at session 1804 Comminderet 1799. Right below the 50/42 something about patent 185 was switched (or swapped out) session 1803. I don’t know what patent is referring to. There are 3 sentences directly under the name Niels that starts with Commanderet again. Not sure what commanderet is meaning but there is something about interim (meaning the middle, wonder if referring to mid-year) 1801 is sick with Springkler (one reference said it was acute fever with red spots see typhus. Endemic typhus can include a rash that spreads, with high fever, a variety of other bad signs and symptoms) whereas the father and mother are dead. Session 1801. The comment to the right side, Didn’t meet commanderet in Reserve? Session 1800 and then Lantrenist? (not sure what that is). And then the next 3 rows that are written darker and crossed out says something about an amtpass.. of amtet session 1801. Met (something) was weak.. to which not … was visited to recruitment was found..can’t be stationed at sea, sea weakness session 1800.
Old no. 51/New 43 Hans, Next row down, has considerable Benk? (don’t know what Benk means) received a pass of unfitness for military service session 1801.
Old no. 52/New 44 Lars. Don’t know what Expd. 8/4 is. To the left, has .. after men witness regarded to next session, Session 1804. Middle directly under Lars, met Session 1801, Amtpass .. of amtet Session 1801. To sea from Kierteminde, did not meet, received patent No. 14 – extra session 1802. To patent no. 14, amtpass given of amtet Session 1803. To the right, shall have amtpass of 1800 but new ..next .. for the Lægdmanden (the military registrar) notified for the Amtman (county official), now away with the skipper Søren Pedersen of Droby, … Session 1800.
I think it would be good to see if there is a confirmation record for Lars as he is 15 years old. Munkebo is a parish that has a shoreline to the sea so some men who were registered in the army might be enlisted into the navy.
Hope this helps,
Geoff

Geoff, thanks for your prompt response. The challenge I have with this family is that there are no parish records for this time period. Niels and Lars are on the 1801 census of Munkebo with 2 sisters. I don't know if I'll be able to find any more about these boys. I was able to find them in the military rolls from 1791 to 1800. This is the last I could find them. I'm wondering if they died from the disease that took their parents. All I know for sure is that the Lord loves and cares for them.

Have you looked for a probate record for the parents of Niels and Lars? These can list the current residence of living children, and I have used them at times to be able to track descendants forward in time.

Thanks for your suggestion. There are no parish records for this time frame. I've never used probate records so don't know where to start. I guess the best thing to do is to take an online class on probate records. The only records of the parents I have is the 1787 Census and the 1801 Census that says they are dead.

I would be glad to help you look for probate records. Can I get the ID number from the FamilySearch tree of the father of the family? This will help me to locate what estate the family may have been living on.
I can usually locate the probate records, but I can't always read them well. That's why I love this Community because I can ask for help.

Thank you so much for your help. I'm excited about all I can learn from you. The person I'm looking for is Hans Christophersen L8SY-FRY. I'm comp;etely self-taught so any help you can give is much appreciated.

Hmm, I wrote a detailed description of my search for probate records, and somehow it's not here now, which is frustrating. Anyway, I searched in the FamilySearch catalog for the parish where the parents were living at the time of their death. There were 4 possible estates listed. I went to the digitized microfilms for each of them, and I looked in the indexes which are found in either the front or back of the book. Unfortunately, I didn't find them, which is odd because it was the law at this time that anyone with dependent children have a probate record, and this couple did have dependent children. So perhaps it was somewhere else, but I don't know where it would be.
I also searched in the census. I found a possible record for the daughter Maren, she possible married a Hans Jacobsen, and I put them in the tree, but couldn't find positive proof.
This is definitely a tough family to follow. Sometimes a probate record may help if one can be found. Looking at the witnesses at the christenings of nieces and nephews can help also, but that's not possible here either.
