Danish Translation
The probate record below is for Ane Hansdatter, wife of the farmer Niels Larssen in Allerup, Sneum Parish. They were parents of daughter Ane, who in the census after her mother's death lived as a foster child with her mother's father Hans Sørenssen (mentioned at the end of the 2nd image below). I am wondering if the document below states why the father Niels appears to have given custody to Hans, or if the record adds to the information just stated. Thank you! This an interesting situation. I did a little digging to understand the situation better. The birth and christening of Ane Nielsen in Sneum on 24 April 1842 has a little note to the far right that states "the mother died" and the father is listed as Niels Larsen Shoemaker. The death entry of the mother lists, Ane Hansdatter died on May 18, 1842 and lists her husband as farmer Niels Larsen of Allerup. She was 26 years and 10 months old. The Danish Demographic Database shows Ane Nielsen (3 years old) as a foster child in the home of Hans Sørensen Slot in the 1845 census. The same database does not show a Niels Larsen (or Lassen) in the parish at the time which means either Niels died or moved after the estate inventory was done in June.
I read the meaning of the estate inventory to say "in behalf for this (child) under legal age is appointed the grandfather Hans Sørensen Slot of Allerup." The role of a guardian in the estate inventory was to protect the rights (legal guardian) of the minor child for their portion of the deceased mothers estate. It did not mean "physical guardian" and I've never seen a legal guardian in the estate inventories that take in the surviving children. I think it's more likely that the child was born, the mother died almost a month later, something happened to the father, and the child was placed in the home of the grandfather who happened to also be the legal guardian. Have you looked in the death records between 1842 - 1845 for the death of the Niels Larsen? If he moved, you might be able to follow him in the military levying rolls.

Thank you so much for your translation and knowledge regarding the role of legal guardian.
I was trying to be as concise as possible soI apologize that I did not originally include the information you found in your first paragraph. Based on that information, I also thought Niels most likely died. Yet, he hadn't died and I found him in a neighboring parish, remarried in the 1845 census (with another child born about 2 years after Ane). Even more interesting (at least to me) is that Neils' first father-in-law, the legal guardian grandfather Hans Sørensen Slot, was the witness at his second marriage. Also, when Niels' ninth child was born about twenty-five years later, he named him Hans Sørensen Slot Nielsen! That and other records all led me to wonder why he would have "given up" custody of his child. It seems that relations were warm...
