Yes Smith is not a Norwegian name. Try lookin for his Naturalization Record. Is he in Family Search? What is his PID number?

Darlene, there is a profile in Ancestry.com of a James M. Madison that matches the dates you have given. The original marriage record found on FHL #1008866 would be good to look at.
It helps us when you share the info you have in FamilySearch. https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/MKNN-DWY

These two documents are very interesting, the one on the left is a church death record for James and the right is his death certificate. Notice a Mrs. J. Gaids (a daughter) is the informant on the death certificate and also appears in the church record. She has indicated James Smith was born in Glasgow, Scotland.

He is in family search. I have lots of information for him. However, no naturalization papers or port of arrival. My research leads me to think he was in New Orleans because his wife is from there. I am not sure about the middle initial.

Yes - this has been driving me crazy for a few years. His daughter is the one who signed the death certificate. Nothing else I have found says Scotland. I have tried for many years to figure this out. My brothers and I also have markers for a recent relative from Southern and Southwestern Norway.

I have found a James Smith Lund in Norway - with the same date of birth. However, he remained in Norway and married there. He could not be my great grandfather. I feel the brick wall will never come down. Thanks for your input - I appreciate it.
