Laxarby parish in Sweden in 1825
Hi. Does anyone know in which county Laxarby parish in Sweden was in 1825? In FamilyTree I see two possibilities: Älvsborg county and Västra Götaland county. In the FamilySearch Wiki I found it only in Älvsborg county. I searched the internet looking for clues but didn't find anything conclusive.
Thank you

From 1634-1997 Laxarby was in Älvsborg county and in 1998 it was changed to Västra Götaland. SVAR's records also indicate that it was in Älvsborg county in 1825.

What is SVAR?

SVAR is Riksarkivet-the Swedish national archives. Their home page is here: https://sok.riksarkivet.se/digitala-forskarsalen . Click on "Church archives" then under "Search archive / parish" enter the name of the parish you want to look at. (If there is more than one parish by that name, you will need to add the County.) When you are looking at a parish's records, there is a link (for most parishes) that reads: "Show history for (parish name) kyrkoarkiv". When you click on that, it opens up to the history of the parish. The link for Laxarby is here: Show history for Laxarby kyrkoarkiv . The link opens up in Swedish, but you can copy the whole thing into Google Translate to get a pretty decent idea of what it is talking about. Anyway, Laxarby was in Älvsborg county until at least 1962 according to the history in the above link.
This history is sometimes useful if you can't find records for the parish you are looking in-you can sometimes look at other, associated, parishes. In this case that would be Edsleskogs, Fröskogs, and Mo parishes.
You can also find out about Älvsborg county by looking in the Wiki under Älvsborg County-or simply Älvsborg. Here is the link for that: https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/%C3%84lvsborg_County,_Sweden_Genealogy . This tells you that Älvsborg County is now part of Västra Götaland.
Hope you are well!!

Hi again Norm. And by the way, aren't you "Elder Baker" the missionary? The same Elder Baker that has helped me many times at the FHL (way back before COVID)? If so, HELLO!
Anyway, thanks for the additional information. But I'm not clear on how to get that "Show history for (parish name) kyrkoarkiv" to come up from the Kyrkoarkiv search tab. Can you provide the step-by-step on how to get that to show up every time?
Thanks!

I am that Elder Baker! And we are missing very much working at the Library. Hello, back to you!!
These are the steps I use for SVAR/Riksarkivet when I need to see the history of the parish and see other parishes that may have records not available where I think they should be:
1-Use this link to begin. It will open up in Swedish. Change it to English by clicking on "Other Languages">choose "English" : https://sok.riksarkivet.se/digitala-forskarsalen
2-Under the gold tabs, choose "Church Archives".
3-Under "Search archive / parish", type in the name of the parish you want to research. If you get more than one result, you need to enter the name of the county in the "County" tab. For this example, enter Laxarby here. Click "Search".
4-Under "Archive/parish" click on "Laxarby kyrkoarkiv".
5-Just a couple of lines above where the records begin, will be a link to "Show history for Laxarby kyrkoarkiv". Click on that.
6-Copy and paste the information into Google Translate. It will give you a fairly decent translation. You should be able to see the parishes that the records might be in from this translation. In this case you would look in Edsleskogs, Fröskogs, Laxarby and Mo for records for Laxarby. Very often, the records you are looking for will be in one of the parishes mentioned in the History.
Most, but not all, of the parishes have this history available. If no history shows up for the parish, you might find some information in the Family Search Research Wiki for that parish.
Hope that helps. Stay well and we will see you at the Library sometime (soon, I hope).
