interpretation of Swedish mantals tax record
I am having trouble interpreting the mantals tax record by this Kågeröd enumerator. In this 1735 tax record, the Tailor Beckman is a head of household and not taxed, probably due to his high station. But, I am puzzled by the two other tick marks. Who do they represent. Beckman was married at the time and had 3 underaged children in 1735. (Beckman is at the bottom of the second page.)
I thought wives were taxed but not the elite. Do one of the tick marks relate to the wife? Notice no one else is "married" either. I can understand why a drangen or a pigen would be working in the household.

This isn't a mantalslängd. ArkivDigital has done a great job in publishing other tax records too. These seems to be a special taxeringslängd that the government did to help pay for debts from the great northern war. It is essentially an income tax paid to the Riksens Ständer office. The tax amount was determined on the persons social standing. This tax was on the nobility, civil and military servants, the clergy with children and servants, and the ordinary country people including their children and servants over the age of 15. The column headings are listed on page 407 (see http://www.arkivdigital.se/aid/show/v835353.b3070.s407). I see the column that Beckman belonged to but I don't know the top word above Betiente. The numbers show what social class he belonged according to the column and the total is to the right. The tax was gathered between 1719 - 1765. There are a couple short paragraphs on it in the book Mantalsforska by Magnus Bäckmark on p. 55 but he doesn't go into depth.
