My ancestor is listed asJohan Häggblom on this image number 740, the year is 1851, June 4th. He was a sailor. Can you tell me what the comments sat in the far right column that are about him and the 2 men listed below him. Also, any other info you can give me would be appreciated such as where the ship was going, the name of the ship and captain and anything else that would be of interest. Thankyou very much, Julie

I see Häggblom with a title in front of his name starting with Matia... but cannot find anything like it in the military word list for Sweden. He was born or came from Umeå. The note says that these 3 are in service in the month in (not sure what the rest means). The date at the top of the page is June 2nd.

In other record Julmcc asked us to look, Johan Häggblom is listed as Matrosen (seaman). I do not have an access to ArkivDigital at home, but I think in this record his title is same.

There are a few things going on here. This is a registration with the Umeå Sjömanshus (Sailors home). There is a book written on this subject (in Swedish) but I haven't read it yet. Here's what I know.
These are for non-military sailors. In Sweden there have been about 50 sailors homes. The sailors home's were located in port cities. The sailors had an opportunity to register with the sailor home's system and make donations when they came to port for a future retirement. They had to declare their home port in the registration lists. A contribution could be made from any sailors home. I looked back on image 40 for the column headings. Starting from the left, June 2 is the date the ship came to the port of Umeå. Joh. Häggblom was a sailor on the schooner Betsy? under the captain Nils Öhman. The 41 90/100 svår lästen refers to the load capacity of the ship in both weight and volume. To interpret that better see the article https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skeppsläst. The rest of the 3 line paragraph seems to refer to the service of the vessel. It says it something about destinations within the country and to other countries within a years summer with the following manning of the ship and then lists the sailors. The row for Joh. Häggblom shows he was born on Åland, his home port was Umeå, age was listed as 1812 (maybe the 25 May belongs to his note), married, and 14 was an amount of money. The note to the right says something like, these 3 have 1 riksdaler each 1 month i ..? something. Not sure if it says bränvin because it's usually spelled -nnvin (brandy), which they take off (maybe referring to a deduction of the money for brandy?)

Yes, this helps alot. I've been looking for his birth month and day so I can try to find is birth records, parents, etc. I had attributed the May 25th to the man above him but will check it out. I have found him 12 times in these records over 20 years but he always refers to just the year of birth, 1812. Thankyou for all the info. Julie

Åland is not one place, it has 16 parishes: Brändö, Eckerö, Finström, Föglö, Geta, Hammarland, Jomala, Kumlinge, Kökar, Lemland, Lumparland, Mariehamn (founded 1859), Saltvik, Sottunga, Sund, Vårdö.
I looked birth records for those parishes in Hiski project (indexed records) and there is no Johan Häggblom born at 1812 in any parish.
Also there are no birth records for any children born to a father with name Häggblom before 1828.
It could be that he was first known with patronymic (after his father) and when he became a sailor, he took the last name Häggblom.
Does any of your sources mention the Johan's patronymic?

Thank-you Heidi for looking at this. No , none of my sources mention a patronymic but I am beginning to think this is why I cannot find him. (I've been looking for 2 years!) I have several Household exams with his wife and children but he always just says he was from Åland, except for one which I have tried to attach the link. He lists Finström this on this one which is also the earliest HHE I have on him. It is Lövånger (AC) AI:8a (136-1841, Image 240, page 234.
Oddly, it has lines drawen through it and then one long line drawen through all the years so I don't know if he actually lived at this location for that time period. All the other ones do not reflect Finström. I tried looking for a birth there but am not very skilled with Finnish research and was not looking for a different last name/patronymic like possibly Andersson?

Do you have any idea why their names have lines drawn through them and no notations for the years of communion/religious notations? Also, his wife’s parents and her siblings are listed directly above them.

When names have been crossed over or lines drawn through them it means that person(s) have gone away, usually moved or died. Also when there are no religious markings, it means that person(s) were under age, some way too sick or old or they did not lived in that house at that time. There is a Nysätra (neighboring parish) crossed over in Flyttad till column. It is most likely they lived in Nysätra for a while.
Johan Häggblom moved into same house where his wife's parents lived, that's why they have been added under parents names.

I found one Johan Hagblom b.25.1.1811 in Finström but he cannot be your man, because he married Gretha Jahnsdotter at 11 Nov 1843.
