Sweden - Could a wife change her last name?
Hi, I'm trying to put a family together, and everything makes sense except that there are three different last names for the mom. Is it at all possible that it's the same woman in all of the records? The links are at the bottom. Thank you!
April 1807 - Marriage of Arvid Carlson and Maja Bengtsdatter
June 1807 - Birth of son Calle to Arvid Carlson and Maja Blomberg
Feb 1810 - Birth of daughter Greta to Arvid Carlson and Maja Blomberg
Oct 1812 - Birth of Johanna to Arvid Carlson and Maja Bengtsdatter

Pretty much until 1920 the only thing you had to do to change your name was tell the priest so yes she could have.

I have an instance where the pastor clearly made a mistake in the record. That's another option.

She may be Maja Bengtsdotter Blomburg -- she may be alternating between using the patronymic Bengtsdotter and using her father's aquired last name Blomberg.
I have an ancestor who did that, but in one of the birth entries both last names were used, thus clearing up the mystery.

Take a look at all of the Household-Examination records for each birth. They should show the mothers name, her birth date and her birth place as well as the other children already born. If the mothers given name, date of birth and place of birth match, that would verify they are the same. Follow the family thru all of the successive H-E records over time. You should look at all of the records (every 5 years or whatever).

Thank you for your help! Because the household examination record has the whole family together, with the birth dates and places all matching for the children, I think it is the same person. One of your answers gave me some insight into acquired last names, which helps justify Blomberg. A friend helped me search the Swedish Death Index and on that it lists her name as Bengtsdotter, but sometimes using the name Nilsdotter.
