I want to find the birth record and the parents of Hans Andrew (Andreas) Hanson who died 9 Oct 1926
The death certificate said his mother's maiden name was "Karen." (He did marry a Karen H. Foss in Chicago on 8 July 1874, so I hope there was no confusion here.) Both his parents were born in Norway.

My apologies on my very first posting. The death certificate for Hans Andrew Hanson said he was born 14 April 1854 in Norway.

So basically you need to fine more documentation in the United States before you jump into Norway. If you can get a more specific place in Norway that would be ideal. Can you find an obituary for him?

Tanner, thanks for offering to help. Attached is Hans Andrew Hanson's obituary from the Eagle Grove (Iowa) Eagle newspaper on 14 Oct 1926. I have quite a bit of information on his four children and his two wives. I have no information on siblings of Hans. I have no information on where in Norway he or his two wives came from. (I thought they might have known each other in Norway before marrying in the US.)

This marriage record looks like your Hans. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-67JS-KTM. It has his parents listed. Tanner is right though, to get into the Norwegian records, you really need to have a more specific location in Norway. Have you found any immigration or passenger documents? Sometimes they'll have more details.

Dear Sam: I was unable to open the link that you sent me. It said I needed to appear at a Family History Center of an affiliated library to see the file. I believe, however, that you provided a link to the marriage of Hans A. Hanson and his second wife Thone M. Vahl on 18 Aug 1895 in Eagle Grove, Wright County, Iowa. I found the document on Ancestry (attached) and it does show the parents of Hans Andreas Hanson to be Hans Nelson and Marte Anderson (presumably Andersdatter). So, this is a very good clue. Such information was not available for his first marriage to Karen H. Foss in Chicago in 1874. I still do not have immigration or passenger documents, but I will keep looking for such data and following the advice of Geoff given on my first (and only) 20 minute consultation through the Family History Library. Thank you very much.

Yes, that's the document I found. Try this one for the other marriage. It lists Karen as Mrs. Karen H. Hansen, not sure why.

I may have found him in Norway but I'm still looking into it. It's much harder without at least a county in Norway. I'll keep you posted.

If this man had been from Sweden you would probably have enough information to find him now but in Norway its harder. You could try the 1865 census to see how many possible matches there are and then trace each one to see if they emigrated. Depending on how many generations back this is you may also make some headway with DNA. How many generations are there between you and him?

Sam, Thank you. I had found the Marriage License as well as the Marriage Index of the 8 Jul 1874 marriage of Hans A. Hanson and Karen H. Foss in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. (I have ordered the Marriage Certificate.) I also had found the Evangelical Lutheran Trinity Church book for that marriage and wondered why it showed Karen H. Hansen. (Was Hansen her maiden name as well as her married name?) The license showed Karen H. Foss. I wondered whether the H. was for Hansen, but if that were the case, why would the church have showed Karen H. Hansen? All the other entries in the church book had the maiden names for the brides. Since the Iowa grave stone of Karen Foss Hanson showed a birth date of 31 May, 1838, I did a Norway Digitalarkivit search for any Karen born on that date in Norway. The only response was a Karen Halvorsdatter born on 31, May 1838 and baptised on 8 Jul 1838 at Vang, Furnes in Vang, Hedmark, Norway. I was excited that it was a Karen H, but I could not connect this person with Foss. I also found a Karen Halvordsatter who emigrated to Chicago on 22 Apr 1869. This is the correct timeframe for Karen H. Foss whose obituary said she lived in Chicago for six years before marrying Hans A. Hanson on 8 Jul 1874 and moving to Ft. Dodge, Webster County, Iowa. I wondered whether Hans Andreas Hanson knew Karen H. Foss in Norway before Karen moved to America. Thank you for your efforts.

There are three generations from my husband to Hans Andreas Hanson. We will reserve this idea is we continue to hit dead ends. I am researching the 1865 census. I agree that is a good idea.

As I said previously, I think I found him. However, there is still much to be vetted that this is indeed the right person. I'll give you what I have found as a start and then you can continue the research to follow this person and see if he matches up. I am including links to his baptism, the 1865 census with this family, the birth of his brother Anton, and the parent's marriage.
The baptism gives the date you had of 14 April 1854 for Hans Andreas Hansen; parents of Hans ??(possibly abbreviation for Nicolai?) Nielsen and Inger M. Andersdatter. https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/9357/87170/18
I wondered if his mother's middle name was Marte? Here is the 1865 census for this family so that I could locate other children's baptism records and the parent's marriage. https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038072007210
From the 1865 census, Anton appeared to be the oldest child. I found his birth record. His mother's name is given as Inger Martea Andersdatter giving a connection to Marte Andersen from Han's US marriage record. https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/9357/87170/5
And finally I found the marriage of this couple, Hans Nicolai Hansen and Inger Martea Andersdatter. This is where the middle name Nicolai appeared. https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/8979/207
I feel pretty good about this but Hans needs to be followed and identified as immigrating around 1874. Take it for what you will and see what else you can find.

Sam, I think you have found it! I won't have time until tomorrow to check it out. I thank you very much.

If you can find the records from his church here in the US they will most likely give where he was from if he was Lutheran as I assume he was. I have found town and parish names in Lutheran deaths and membership lists for Norwegian and German churches in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. They may give them for marriages too.

Linda, Thank you for the wonderful tip to find congregation records in the Lutheran Church record books. I found some such pages, but unfortunately the pages did not pertain to the time periods of the ancestors belonging to the churches. I do believe (with Sam's help above) that we have located Hans Andreas Hanson and his wife Karen Hansdatter Foss in Norway; however, we are still trying to find the outmigrated and emigration records to perfectly tie them to America.
