John A Malmberg (Carlson or Karlsson)
Hey, I’m trying to locate information on my great great great grandfather. His name is John A Malmberg...but his last name from what I’m told in Sweden was Carlson or Karlsson. He was born December 2, 1845 and from what I’ve read he was either married to Eva Charlson or a Sophia. He has a sister named Sophia. He traveled to America in 1869 & started out in Kansas and ended up in miller county Missouri. I am looking for information from his Swedish roots...really anything. I’m really hoping for his parents names & possible birthdates. I have researched this for about 2 weeks & cannot seem to come up with this info. It’s like he didn’t even exist in Sweden. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you! 😊

Hello, I checked Emibas for you and found two possibilities:
- Johannes Karlsson born 2 December 1845 who emigrated to America in 1869 from Malma parish.
- Carl Johan Carlsson born 2 December 1845 who emigrated to American in 1870 from Mörlunda parish.
I think the first option is more likely. Both men were single at the time of their emigration so if your man was married then that is a problem. Also neither match has a name that would cause their middle initial to be A.

Gosh you are amazing! How did you find this? Also how do I put this in the family tree? Hoping it links me to his parents. I was told he was 1st cousin to the king of Sweden & a Duke but not sure if that’s accurate & not sure how to find out if it’s true.

I used a CD database called Emiboss that records people found in the household exams who came to Sweden. Here is the family for option 2 in arkivdigital https://app.arkivdigital.se/volume/v10003?image=107&page=98®ister_collection=28 or if you don't have a subscription there it is household exams 1862-1872 page 98.
I doubt that they were that closely related to royalty but the way to check would be to research the ancestry of his parents back two generations and then compare it against the royal family's tree.

sadly I do not have a subscription to there & I cannot seem to find the household exams 1862-1872 page 98. Any chance you have a link for that?

Here is the link, Tanner means Riksarkivet, which is free.

Wow! You guys are so amazing!!! I’m just at awe!!! Thank you soooo much! I’m pretty sure this is the dad...but now I’m having trouble understanding the names & how to search them...I’m assuming the last name is the hemansege but I can’t figure out if that’s the correct spelling.

Hemmansegare means house owner. It is not a last name. Actually they did not have a familyname. They were known with patronymic which means they were know as son or daughter of their father. Like Johannes Carlsson means Johannes son of Carl. A daughter of Carl would be Carlsdotter often abbreviated to Carlsdr. Parents of Johannes are according to this household record Carl Johansson and Maria Petersdotter.

Thank you so much! You are a wealth of great information! Any chance you could help me figure out if they are related to royalty? My family has told me that John sold his birthright to come to America...he was the 1st cousin of the king & a duke...I can’t seem to find any legit information on that.

The physical CD is no longer sold but the database can still be searched for free here https://emiweb.se/en/home/. Also the database is part of Ancestry, but its difficult to use since Ancestry does not let you search for an exact birthdate.

Stories like that are common and are almost never true. I think the same can safely be said here. This is a rural family using patronymics while the nobility live in manors and cities and used surnames. If you want to research further you can look for them on Rigsarkivet.
The father was born 27 December 1818 in Vara parish and the mother was born 1821 in Malma parish.

Good to know...I kind of figured it must be a story because I could not find anything legit when researching...I cannot makes sense of these different search engines.
