Search for Swedish immigrants in the US
Hi! I am looking for information on some Swedish relatives who immigrated to the US:
Salomon Börjesson, (GWM6-DK2) born 19 November 1856 in Bredaryd, Jönköping, Sweden to Börje Haraldsson and Maria Mattisdotter. Left for the US on 22 November 1878 in Kulltorp, Jönköping.
and his sister, Mathilda Börjesdotter, (GWM6-6T4) born 10 December 1858 in Kulltorp, Jönköping, Sweden to the same parents. Left for the US on 5 April 1880 in Kulltorp.
Any suggestions on where to look for this info, and also how the names Salomon and Börjesson/Börjesdotter might have been Anglicized?

I did a quick check in the immigration databases on Ancestry and did not see a Salomon (or S.) Börjesson born in 1856 who left in 1878, but there is a Salomon Börjesson who might be him. In the Göteborg passenger lists there is a Salomon Börjesson who was listed as 18 years old (est. birth year 1860) from Gnosjö parish which is in the same chapelry as Kulltorp that left in May of 1878. The birth year is off by 4 years and the month of emigration is May instead of November which the moving out record of Kulltorp shows. So why do I think it's him? The household examination record shows that Salomon left to N. Amerika in 1878 (with no month or day) and the certificate number 26 in the same record corresponds to the row in the moving -out book. This supports that he left in November. But there are a few problems. 1. Salomon is a very unusual name in Sweden at this time and Börjesson makes it even more unusual. 2. To have a Salomon Börjesson in the Göteborg passenger lists in 1878 who is leaving from Gnosjö seems more than coincidence and the odds that it's not your person are even more remote. 3. Lastly, the moving -out record of Gnosjö parish doesn't show a Salomon Börjesson who left in 1878. Oddly the Gnosjö moving -out record in 1878 shows a Salomon Andersson who left in November to Våthult parish. This supports the idea that there was an error in the book keeping. Before 1961 Kulltorp and Gnosjö were in the same chapelry and the books were kept by the same pastor. Another clue to prove or disprove is in the Göteborg passenger list. The original record lists Salomon Börjesson as a cousin traveling with Petter Nelsson, his wife Mathilda, and a sister in-law Kristina Johansson. All 4 are listed on the same contract number 6276. In those days the traveler would make travel arrangements through an agent. Sometimes each traveler has their own contract. Other times a family would be on the same contract. I wonder if the contract was created by Petter Nelsson who maybe didn't really know Salomon's age. Then perhaps Salomon's leaving the parish was reported during household examination as 1878 and the pastor mixed got confused with the other Solomon who left Gnosjö in November. It's a hypothesis, but if Salomon is a cousin to Petter, Mathilda, or Kristina then it would support that he's your ancestor. Another hypothesis is that Salomon changed his name after leaving the parish and is on the departure lists under something different. Did he use another surname in the United States? Hope this helps.
