My great-grandfather was born in Puolanka, Oulu, Finland in 1852. His baptismal and marriage records show his name as "Anders" yet in other records as "Antti". Are the two names interchangeable in Finnish?

Antti is a normal Finnish name, not a pet form. My brother is Antti. Your great-greatgrandfather's real name was Antti, but preast held the records in Swedish and they also changed peoples names to Swedish in church records. Abour 1880 came law that records had to be kept in Finnish and names started to be written also in Finnish. Add also the Swedish forms into FamilySearch FamilyTree into the other information section as an altenate name. One Swedish name can be used for several Finnish names so they are not really interchangeable. E.g. Anders might have been used for Antti and Antero. Johan could mean Juho, Juha, Juhani, Jussi, Johannes.
