Is this just for the Living? If so... why....
This whole Family Group idea is an overkill for a simple problem of duplicates… if that is its only use.
It could be so much more valuable!
To bring together all the researchers in the entire family into one place where they can collaborate, discuss research strategies, create research plans and share discoveries. Then to be able to migrate these documented facts into the FamilySearch Tree with safeguards against removal… requiring new documented facts in order to lover-ride the information.
If it is just for the living… why are we able to select ancestors to import into itl?
I find the presentation of this new innovation very vague and misleading.

It is not just to have fewer duplicates. It is exactly for what you describe. It is "To bring together all the researchers in the entire family into one place where they can collaborate, discuss research strategies, create research plans and share discoveries" about their shared living relatives. All deceased relative are still in the main body of the database where they can also be seen by that same group of collaborating researchers for the same type of work.

The family group trees aren't about the deceased ancestors, but because we can link to them in through the family group trees, we can share stories in ways we can feel safe doing so. Use the Together by FamilySearch app to share family information and stories on the fly and know that they are saved permanently on FamilySearch for generations of family members still to come. Share stories about you AND your deceased grandparents, but keep them safe inside your family group to protect the living family members.
