This is a very detailed entry of a marriage with really interesting details. However, I'm not entirely sure whether the civil officer was a little unfortunate in his wording when describing the publication in the cantonal gazette. I have therefore put the passage in italic. However, the wording is not of decisive importance for your request. You will find the translation after the transcription.

Heute den vierundzwanzigsten August achtzehnhundertachtundsiebenzig sind vor dem unterzeichneten Zivilstandsbeamten erschienen die Verlobten:

1. Portmann Johann, Pfarrsiegrist von und in Escholzmatt, Mettlen, Sohn des Johann Portmann und der Elisabeth Portmann, Witwer der Magdalena Renggli sel., geboren in Escholzmatt den siebenten September achtzehnhundertvierundzwanzig und
2. Banz Maria, Näherin von und in Escholzmatt, Tochter des Franz Banz und der Magdalena Witschy, ledig, geboren in Escholzmatt den ersten Mai achtzehnhundertundvierzig (:1ten Mai 1840:).

Verkündet in Escholzmatt, durch Publikation im Kantonsblatt den No 31 den vierten August achtzehnhundertundachtundsiebenzig.
Nachdem dieselben die vom Gesetze erforderten Ausweise vorgelegt und alsdann auf Befragen beide geantwortet hatten, dass sie einander zur Ehe nehmen wollen, so wurde diese Ehe von dem unterzeichneten Zivilstandsbeamten im Namen des Gesetzes als geschlossen erklärt.
