Last Residence on Ship Manifest and Input on Departure Port
Hello. I have included a link to a manifest of immigrants from 1901, departing Napoli and arriving in New York. I am trying to figure out the last residence for a passenger, but I’m not able to match it to a city/town in Italy. Can anyone figure out what this word is?
No. on List = 13
Passenger = Matilde Gariboldi
I am looking at the town name in column 9, “Last Residence”.

This record is for my great-grandmother, who was born and lived in Genoa. I am surprised that she took a ship from Napoli instead of a port closer to her home town. Any thoughts on why she would do this?
Thank you!

The image quality is significantly better and can be zoomed MUCH larger on MyHeritage where the place has been indexed as "Fontanac…os"

Using the much preferred copy so graciously supplied by @Áine Ní Donnghaile it appears rather clearly to be Fontanarosa a town and comune located in Avellino province, Campania region, Italy.
I looked up the trip to see if the outbound emigration data had more info here: http://www.ciseionline.it/portomondo/Dettagli_Usa.asp?id=918899Sadly, that origin data is not confirmed. But, it seems pretty clear to me.
I agree with questioning why your GGM would have sailed from Napoli, more importantly I would wonder why she was in Fontanarosa, which is no where near Genoa. This would in turn lead me to question whether or not you have found the correct passenger arrival manifest for her and how you know for sure that is her (considering the scarce identifying data). There are plenty of people named Matilde Garibaldi, so maybe you can share more data. Perhaps there is another arrival that makes more sense?
Here's an example: https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/4038309060:7488
This family, which includes a Mathilde, are indeed from Genoa.
Anyway, I hope this helps you in your research.

Thank you both, @SantaNinfa. I appreciate your input. I don't have access to My Heritage, but I'll add this document to my list and will look it up when I go to the library next.
andThank you for calling out that I may not have the correct manifest. The age is correct, but you're right…the departure port is suspect. I will continue to look for another record that may line up with her birth location.
I do know my GGM's birth date, which was 28 Mar 1880, in Genoa, Italy. I believe I found her birth certificate which gives her the name Maria Luigia Metilde Gariboldi. She moved to the US, was naturalized and died in the US. All of her documents in the US have her name as "Matilda Garibaldi", and my dad and brothers knew her as Matilda. I am confident in her birth date. I am hoping I have the correct birth certificate, but I continue to look for another record to confirm it. No one in my family knew the names of her parents, only that she was born in Genoa, Italy. The birth certificate is located here:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G9WL-1PVT?i=1232
I also know that she had a sister named Emilia who moved from Italy to New Jersey and married Mr. Garbarini. I found a birth certificate for the same parents for a Pellegrina, so I wonder if she changed her first name.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-99WL-JSLJ?view=explore&groupId=M944-94N
There was also a male child, Innocente, who died very young.
I'm curious of your thoughts on the birth certificate. I'm trying to confirm I have the correct one so that I don't research the wrong ancestors. Any input on other methods of verifying this?
I appreciate your help!

What about a Petition for Naturalization? I have read that this contains the ship info, but I'm not sure where to find it. She was married when she was Naturalized, so her married name was Matilda Capurro. The Citizenship certificate shows that the petition number was 1109, Washoe County, Nevada, 1936. Do you know where can I find the petition paperwork?

Thanks @Áine Ní Donnghaile for the URLs
I do believe that you have the correct birth record - when compared to her death certificate, it seems like a match. Using the Ellis Island Gold Form search method at https://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html you can search for possible arrivals using just a few letters of first and last names, e.g. ma and gari - such a search yields a couple of possible arrivals for your GGM using the name Maria Garibaldi. Same for Emilia. The Ellis Island site is free, but you will need a username and password. Also, it is clunky for viewing records, but doable. Once you have a ship, date of arrival and manifest you can then find it on FS or Ancestry or MyHeritage.
I'd need to take a much closer look at Emilia - when traced back to their marriage, the Emilia Garbarini that most records in that area of NJ cover had a maiden name of Varni - and they were married in NY - so more resaech needs to be done - anything is possible - they could be half siblings if father died and mother remarried. Also, I am not convinced that birth record for Pellegrina is her. A sibling of Maria Matilde for sure, but not necessarily the birth of Emilia. Do you have verified death info for Emilia? There are two same/similar named women that died in NJ in that region.
I do not believe FS has Washoe county natz paperwork for 1936 - their records seeem to stop at roughly 1906. I will look around. Perhaps NARA has something.
I'll keep poking around.

Thanks for the updates URLs, @Áine Ní Donnghaile. I'm not sure what happened there.
Thank you for your input, @SantaNinfa. I am interested to try the Ellis Island Gold Form. I live in Washoe County, so I will call them on Monday to see if they have the books and if I can search through them.
Regarding Emelia, the only information we have is in the obit for my GGM, which mentions that she has a surviving sister, Mrs. Emelia Garbarini of Inglewood, NJ. I was trying to match up the sister to make sure I had the correct birth cert and parents for my GGM.

@Carrie2962 I suggest not relying too heavily on spelling from an obituary. Spelling and other details from obituaries may be unreliable. For example, the town in New Jersey is spelled Englewood.
There is a 1964 Englewood death for Emilia F Garbarini, but her husband's obituary lists her maiden name as "Varni."

Good to know, and good find, @Áine Ní Donnghaile. Thanks for looking.

Search NARA and see what information is available for procurement:

A phone call, and an email will probably yield good results, see here: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40493725
If you scroll down to the info for the National Archives of San Francisco. You will see a list of Volumes, Petition numbers and related dates.
Your Petition number does not line up with 1936, but, in general, they are pretty helpful.
You may need to get the records for Matilda AND her husband. See if you can get the Certificate of Arrival when making your request.

I received a copy of the Naturalization Card from the courthouse, but it only gives the date and port of arrival, which is "June 7, 1901, NYC".
I'll see if the National Archives has anything else, and I'll ask for a Certificate of Arrival.
Thanks for the input!

Hello. I heard back from the National Archives. They found the Petition for citizenship, but the archivist indicated that there was no certificate of arrival with the petition. The petition says that my GGM's last residence was Genoa, Italy, and that she arrived on the vessel “Manila” on 7 Jun 1901. At least I can now confirm that is the correct ship.
Thank you again for your input!

@SantaNinfa - Yes! They sent me a copy of the Petition for Citizenship, front and back, and the Declaration of Intention, with her picture and signature. I am very happy to have these documents.
