Finding records…
Is it possible to find civil or church records for ancestors at the local village/town/city level in Hungary (Slovakia and Romania as well) if I physically go to the locality?
These are some of the places my ancestors lived: Devavanya, Paks, Nyiregyhaza, Kecskemet, Sahy, Krupina, Nagyvarad, Ipoly-Hidveg, Hont and Budapest.
I am planning a trip to Hungary this spring. It is a once in a lifetime trip so I want to use the time there as effectively as I can.
Would hiring a local historian/genealogist be my best option in finding records? How would I go about doing that?
I would appreciate any insights as to how I would accomplish my goal to find records and learn more about my ancestors.
Thank you!

Dear Deanna:
Since you are planning a visit to Hungary, you might want to do a free 20-minute Consultation. This can be done by:
- Going to the main "Community" page
- Clicking on "Free Research Consultation"
- Going to "Europe"
- Finding "Hungary" and clicking on that
- Then going through the various stages of booking the free 20-minute appointment that is online.
Please feel free to ask the question in this group by:
- Clicking on "Discussions
- Clicking the down arrow and clicking "Ask A Question"
- Then please be specific in your question
There is also the Wiki https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Hungary_Genealogy.
We wish you much luck in your venture.
