Hawaii Analogy
Hello! I'm a stake temple and family history consultant in Ivins, Utah! I'd like to share this analogy I used in a recent training meeting with people in my stake with FH callings (leaders, consultants and EQ/RS counselors over FH). We were talking about experiencing the joy of temple and family history work. I shared this quote from Benjamin De Hoyos from April 2023 Gen. conf:
As we follow the guidance of the prophets and learn how to do our family history and perform the temple ordinances for our ancestors, we will experience great joy to the point that we will not want to stop doing it. The Spirit will flood our hearts, awaken our faculties to do it, and guide us as we search for the names of our ancestors.
I asked "Who has felt this great joy?"
Then I showed a picture of Hawaii and asked who had been there and I asked them to describe it (they said amazing, beautiful, Paradise!). I told them I have never been there and what if they offered me a free trip to Hawaii but I said I'm too busy to go because I need to go shopping and besides I've already been to the beach in California. They would think I didn't have any idea what I was talking about and that I had no idea what I was missing out on! I told them it's like family history, I can't make them get on the plane to go to Hawaii, they have to experience it for themselves! Then I shared a quote from President Nelson about making a sacrifice of time and talked about how everyone can find time during the week to do FH (Sunday's are an easy day for most people!).
