Seeking Information on Bacci Family - Olinto, Umile, Pietro, and Mary Elizabeth
Hello fellow researchers,
I am currently on a quest to uncover more details about my family's roots in Italy and need some assistance in my research. I have made significant progress in tracing my family tree within the United States but have hit a roadblocks when it comes to research in Italy. Specifically, I am looking for records related to Olinto C. Bacci, Umile Castelvecchi Bacci, Pietro Aeneas/Amadeo Bacci, and Mary Elizabeth Bacci.
Olinto C. Bacci (GH6F-WB9): My great-grandfather, Olinto C. Bacci, was reportedly born in Italy and immigrated to the United States. I believe that I have found all documents within the united States including naturalization and immigration. While this is, on his naturalization documentation he has a different immigration date then what I have found; they are almost exactly one month apart.
Umile Castelvecchi Bacci (LYG5-L9H): Umile was Olinto's wife, and I'm keen to gather any records related to her, especially her immigration and background details. I have yet to find any documentation of her living in the United States but my Great Uncle believes that she did indeed immigrate here but for only a matter years as she soon passed.
Pietro Aeneas/Amadeo Bacci (LYGR-85R): Pietro is a central figure in my research as I am a direct descendant of his. He was born in what we believe is Castelnuovo, Italy. However, I suspect this might be an incorrect or generic name for his birthplace, and our family stories point to Gallicano, Italy. Pietro arrived in the U.S. through Ellis Island between 1893 and 1896. I have almost all documents regarding his life after 1918 but any information about his immigration, naturalization, and early life would be incredibly valuable.
Mary Elizabeth Bacci (LYGR-85R): Mary Elizabeth, Pietro's sister, is also of interest, and I would appreciate any available records related to her life and immigration journey. As with Pietro, I have found almost all documentation of her after 1910 but lack anything prior.
I've already found some records for these individuals, but I'm hoping to fill in the gaps and verify the information I have. If anyone has suggestions, tips, or access to relevant records that could shed light on my family's history, please share. Any help is greatly appreciated, and I'm more than willing to exchange information and collaborate!
Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide in unraveling my family's past!
Best regards,
Griffin Cantrell

Traduzione in italiano (Italian Translation):
Cari colleghi ricercatori,
In particolare, sto cercando documenti relativi a Olinto C. Bacci, Umile Castelvecchi Bacci, Pietro Aeneas/Amadeo Bacci e Mary Elizabeth Bacci.
È nato presumibilmente a Castelnuovo, in Italia.
Cordiali saluti,
Griffin Cantrell

I'm confused - is Bacci the surname or is Olinto?
Anyway, according to his naturalization, he was born in 1847 in Gallicano in Lucca province. Unfortunately, during that time (1815-1865) there are no civil records available, only church records, and those aren't available online, so that is going to be a stumbling block.
However, if he was indeed married to Umile Castelvecchi in Italy after 1865, then there may be records available of the marriage as well as copies of their baptismal records in the marriage publication.
It does strike me as odd that Bacci would be born in 1847 and only have children from the mid-late 1880s, so perhaps there are earlier children that you don't know about.
What I would suggest is that you start looking for the birth records of Mary Elizabeth and Peter in the Gallicano records. They are only static images so you have to seach through them visually; you can't enter a name in FamilySearch and hope to pull them up. Here is the link to them: https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/index?owc=MCRD-T38%3A349802601%2C350142401%3Fcc%3D2043811

OK, here is the birth record of Pietro Bacci (#2), son of Olinto Bacci and Umilia Castelvecchi, born 2 Jan 1888: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89W7-XWB2?i=1339&wc=MCRD-BM9%3A349802601%2C350142401%2C350142402&cc=2043811
Haven't found Mary Elizabeth yet and I'm back to 1881. Might she have been born someplace other than Gallicano?

OK, here we go. Olinto and Umiliana married in Barga, Lucca on 4 Feb 1886. Olinto was about age 33, born in Perpoli, a frazione of Gallicano. He was son of Pellegrino and of Maria Venturi.
Umuiliana was about age 30, born in San Pietro in Campo, a frazione of Barga. She was daughter of Giovanni and of Rosa Giuliani.

Umiliana / Umilia must have died because Olinto remarried in 1891 to Luisa Niggiani, daughter of unknown parents: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G9W7-Y3TT?i=1630&wc=MCRD-T3D%3A349802601%2C350142401%2C350142701&cc=2043811

Dear Cousin Vinny,
I wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude for all the work you've put into helping me and my family with our search. Your dedication and time mean a lot to us. To address a few of the questions you had:
- Bacci and Olinto have been swapped around multiple times throughout his time here, but as you've demonstrated, we believe that his first name was Bacci and his last name was Olinto, based on his original immigration records, family stories, and the findings of other researchers.
- To be completely honest, I hadn't given much thought to the gap between his and his first child's birth, but your point is very valid. I'll have to do some more digging to see if I can find further documentation regarding other children.
- Regarding Mary's birthplace, as per her marriage certificate, she was indeed not born in Gallicano but was instead born in Barga, Italy.
- In regards to Umiliana's death, we've had debates about it but haven't been able to find a death record for Umile or any records of Bacci's remarriage in the United States, although we did know that he remarried to Louise at some point. Your findings have finally put an end to these debates!
Once again, thank you for your dedication and hard work. It's greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Griffin Cantrell

Olinto is the given name. Bacci is the surname.
The allegati for his 1886 marriage would contain a copy of his baptismal record. It should be somewhere in this folder but the allegati packets are hopelessly out of order. If you take an hour or two to look through them you'll probably find it.

You're absolutely correct; Olinto Bacci was his name.
I have a question regarding something I came across last night. I believe it's a document related to Mary's birth. It's from the same year and area, with the name Maria Bacci. Unfortunately, it's just an index of all births in 1886 with a Registry number. Could you please advise on where I can find the registry that correlates to this number?
Below is the document in questions. Maria Bacci's registry number is 191 for 1886.

I was looking for some information on Umiliana and noticed that her name on the marriage certificate was Umiliana Castelvecchi but her parents last name was Giuliani. Do Italians have a similar tradition to the Spanish where they adopt their mothers last name or what does this mean?

Here you go: Maria Olinta Palmira Bacci born 2 Nov 1886 in Barga to Olinto Bacci and Umilie daughter of Giovanni Vastelvecchi: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G9W7-HPN7?i=1739&cc=2043811

Giuliani is the mother's surname. The surname of fathers isn't generally given on Italian marriage and death records because it is understood to be the same as that of the child. Scribes took lots of shortcuts when writing (maybe to avoid using more ink than necessary?).
