I need help reading this birth record. It is different than any I have come acrossed as not specifying the mother and father. This is a different format. Can someone Decipher number 6 Sara Cathrineiette birth record page 347 and page 370 Thomas Diderick Parents of both of these children. And do a script of what it says. I need to learn. Thankyou

Number 6 first.
Erich Jensen, Frie-Slagter [so a free butcher, meaning he had to right to work as a butcher in Odense, not being in the butchers-guild, which required a special permission], paa Sorte Brd?grd [= Sorte Brødre Gaard], hans Datter Døbt [his daughter baptised]: Sara Cathrinielle. [so the mother's name is not mentioned]
Jomfrun Maria Henriette Jessen, Tolderens [= Customs official] datter, bbr [= bar barnet; carried the child].
Jomfrun Anne Marie ?Sørk?, ?ghs? [?]
Fadderne [Witnesses] var Mons[ieur] Iversen, Mon[sieur] Johannes Bang, Mon[sieur] ?Bissing?, Kramboed-Svende [= Krambod Svende -> so these three "Monsieurs" were all "Secondhandshop guild-journeymen"; a svend in this context is in german "geselle", in english "journeyman" having gone through as an apprentice for a "mester" [master] and acquired a "svende-brev" ["journeyman-letter" = certificate of vocational aptitude]
A woman is called "jomfrue" [= virgin] is she has a certain social status [in this instance probably her father having "Borgerskab" in Odense, in german Bürgerschaft; it was needed for owning a shop in a "Købstad" (merchant town)]. Without that a woman of lower social status would be called "pige" [= girl].

Number 13.
S[eigneur] Erich Jensen Slagters Barn Døbt med Navn: Tomas Diderich. [= Seigneur Erich Jensen butchers child baptised with the name: Tomas Diderich]
Rasmus Skræp Skomagers kone bbr [Rasmus Skræp, shoemakers wife, carried the child]
Christ. [short for Christen or Christian] Fransen Holst Skomagers kone ghs [Christen Fransen Holst, shoemakers wife, accompanied; I figured out that "ghs" means "gik hos" = went with].
Faddere var [Witnesses were] Rasmus Skræp, Christ[en/ian] Fransen skomager, Knud Nielsen ??roe?- Smed or Svend?. [I still have troubled with the often creative capital letters and it is for me also a bit unclear if it says "svend" or "smed" = smith]

Are you saying from this above record that the girl who carried the child means she gave birth to the child but is not the wife of the father Erich Jensen?
0 -
The woman carrying the child is never the mother.
As the mother was not allowed to enter the church until the introduction ritual 40 days after the birth, she couldn't be present at the child's baptism, which should take place within a week of the birth.
Only with a home-baptism - "hjemmedøbt" - (which became allowed for healthy children after 1771) could the mother be present at baptism; and then later the child was presented in the church by the mother.
In neither baptism-record is the mothers name mentioned -> you will have to find the marriage record!

Very good Thankyou. One other Question if you have time. I got this record from a source of my ancestor
Eric Jensen Malling LQR6-Q9H. I cannot find in any source attached to them when they picked up the name Malling. It makes me wonder if the Eric Jensen in his children birth records is the same person. Any Advice on this.

Folketælling 1787: Odense Købstad. Sortebrødre Kirkegaard.
Erich Jensen Malling Mand 47 1740 Gift Husstandsoverhoved Slagtermester
Johanne Maria Kragsdatter Kvinde 30 1757 Gift Gift Med Husstandsoverhoved
Ana Lucia Mallings Kvinde 15 1772 Ugift Hans Barn Af Tidligere Ægteskab
Gustavus Andreas Friderich Malling Mand 11 1776 Ugift Hans Barn Af Tidligere Ægteskab
Sara Cathrine Mallings Kvinde 5 1782 Ugift Hans Barn Af Tidligere Ægteskab
Maren Kragsdatter Kvinde 14 1773 Ugift Plejebarn [relative to Johanne Maria?]
Source: https://www.danishfamilysearch.dk/cid607161
So the butcher Erich Jensen from the church book is with 100% certainty the butcher "Erich Jensen Malling" here in the census!
Quite interesting that his two daughters are written in the genitive "Mallings" whereas his son is not (Malling).
You would generally only get a "geographical" surname if you moved away [you wouldn't be named Malling if you still live in Malling)]. So Erich Jensen (or an ancestor) must have come from eastern Jutland.
Malling: https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malling
NB: The census records are what people calls themselves. Whereas what the priest decides being written in the church book becomes the legal name.
Census 1801: Odense Købstad. Sortebrødre Torv.
Johanne Maria Malling [born Krag] Kvinde 44 1757 Enke Husmoder slagter
Caroline Elisabet Kvinde Ugift Hendes datter [= "her daughter", but maybe not Erich Jensen's??]
Anne Cathrine Kvinde 6 1795 Ugift tiltaget barn [child in foster care]
Niels Krag Mand 20 1781 Ugift Tjenestefolk slagtersvend [relative to Johanne Maria?]
Source: https://www.danishfamilysearch.dk/cid1681554
So by 1801 Erich Jensen Malling has died, as Johanna Maria appears as a widow and as "slagter" so she must have taken over her husbands business with help from the possible relative Niels Krag.

Søn: Frederik Malling, myndig, borger og slagter her i byen. [of-age, town-citizen and butcher in Odense]

Odense Borgerskabsregister (1707-1785):
Erik Jensen. Slagter. 11/4 1781. Folio 411

Odense Rådstueprotokol (1761-1785).
Folio 411 (backside)
Erich Jensen, boende her i Odense...ernæret sig af Slagteri...hand fra Kongelige Krigs=Tieneste...erholdt Kongelige Allernaadigst Bevilling 30. Marts 1781...antages som Mester udi Slagter-Lauget i Odense...mødte og begiærede a ?vinde? sit Borgerskab her i Odense...
Source (page 331, left mid): https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=20118351#279746,54167986
NB: So in 1781 he is not called Malling!
We don't learn where he is born.
He has been in the army (unclear if as a butcher?)
He has got a Royal Grant to be a butcher 30. March 1781, but has worked as a butcher in the town beforehand.
He has become a Slagter-Mester (Butcher-master) within the Odense Butcher's Guild.
And he then acquires "Borgerskab" (Town-citizenship) within Odense.

Wow Thank you Neils for all this work and deciphering. It will take me some time to go through all of this information and with it I am trying to learn the language as I compare the original record to your translations. This will take some time to sort out . I really appreciate your help. I hope I can Text you again when needed. Your promptness and knowledge just amazes me. I work at the Family search center as a Service missionary in Ogden and knowing that this community is so helpful I will teach others to use this great community help.
By the way do you teach classes in reading Scandinavian records?
0 -
There are some excellent handwriting lessons available here: https://swedishgenealogyguide.com/learning-center . These lessons will help with all Scandinavian records.
Also, there are a couple of excellent webinars available here: https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/lessons/scandinavian-handwriting
and here: https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/lessons/scandinavian-handwriting-part-3

Hi Beata.
I'm basically autodidact. I started without any pre-knowledge in 2018 researching my own family from Denmark and Sweden bringing me slowly back in time. I started since both countries had made great strides in putting the material online for free. Then slowly you get more and more proficient in reading the handwriting. So I'm fairly good at ca. 1750-onwards, the period most people can get traced back to (with the help of census' & if the church books survives). I have much less practice in early 1700 and 1600 texts, as fewer family lines can be traced so far back. Yet sometimes you can find such bad handwriting (old priests with arthritis? or someone who doesn't care?) in younger material, that only really trained experts can figure it out.
See for instance these probates from 1840 -> you have two different handwriting styles: Left is very hard to read [I would need help] and right much nicer. https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=21912897#432164,33034953
I found it a good way to improve my skills is in helping others as you get into contact with material I wouldn't otherwise research. The most essential skill is knowing where to look and knowing "the system". For instance probates for Copenhagen and Danish "lægdsruller" (records of rural males that could be drafted as land-soldiers) are basically impossible to use unless you spend the time to learn how the system works.
Also when you know the "standard language and method" of the priests you can more easily guess what it "should say".
Otherwise as Norm says using the handwriting guides can help a lot (I still have problems in identifying some capital letters - they can be pretty weird sometimes).
Cheers (and you can always text me again - I'll try to help when I have the time)
Niels

great advise. I agree about the more you view and research the documents the better you get at reading them, I am just not at your level and hope to be someday. What I am doing now is taking your translation of that record and learning the wordsbetter, This will be so helpful. The 1700 and earlier are yes so much harder. I just sing your priases though, I have passed along to the patrons I help at the family search center what you have taught me and how to use community. It was apart of our training on Monday. Yes I will call upon you again when I am in a frazzle and frustrated. Thankyou you so much again for you talent.

Need help on the words before Hans Jorgen Pedersen ' name and afte. r I think it is Sattod Mólle, or Sattor. I think this is his birth location but I cannot find what parish it is in. Obvious they are not married because she is still a Pige, maiden. And she is first to be listed as a parent. Any help reading this document would be helpful.

I am wondering if the description before his name Is saying also. If he is the Father or not.
I found this record one county over from Fodby, this is in Herlufmagle, Tybjerg, Præstø, Denmark. Possibly the same Ingor with her son Jacob the places of birth and ages match Jacobs birth record. I have search Fodby and many other places trying to see if she married Hans Jorgan Pedersen who is on the birth record with no luck. Also I could not find Inger married to this Neils, yet. Its curious and wondered if you could also translate this record. I cannot decipher the place of birth of the father. And the description of the father. I'm searching to see if there is a link between the two records.
Thankyou so much.

Just started going through this. Will take me a bit to go through it but wow you are so amazing thankyou so much. I'm so excited. I'll get back with you after I read it. You are the best.

WOW What a mistery. I get tripped up when I can't read, decipher the places. I was off by a bit with Saltø Mølle. I missed that so I couldn't find the Parish to search in. Once that was found than I see how you found everything else which each census lead you to more info and then confirmed by the Lægdsrulle records as our man. Brilliant. So Hans Jørgen Pedersen was commissioned to become a dragoon in 1851 but unexpectedly dies. I wonder what he died of.
I don't think He ever married Inger. I looked for a marriage in Fodby, Skelby and Vallensved Sogn. Quite sad. He may or may not planned to marry her but maybe he was too sick to do so. I will now try and find the marriage of Inger Marie Jacobsdatter to Niels Hansen.
I am so grateful you take the time to help. Truly.
Sincerely, Beata Clifford.

Inger Marie gets married again!
I haven't found out when Niels Hansen dies, yet.
Neither found the census for 1860 to see if she gets any more children with Niels Hansen [other than Hans Nielsen, who was 2 years old in census 1855: Born 25. oktober 1853 in Herlufmagle Sogn, NOT Rislev as the census 1855 says]
Viet: 1. August 1869 i Skelby Sogn.
Ungkarl Jens Jørgensen af Kagstrup [in Skelby Sogn]. Født 16. Maj 1845. Vaccineret 3. September 1846.
Enke efter indsidder Niels Hansen af Bidstrup Inger Marie Jacobsen [/Jacobsdatter]. Født 7. Juni 1825. Vaccineret 21. August 1827. [So it is her with 100% certainty]

NB: So this is her second marriage with a man 20 years younger.
Census 1870: Præstø, Tybjerg, Skelby Sogn, Trælløse, Huus, 97-F2, FT-1870, E1832
Jens Jørgensen 25 G Husfader Arbejdsmand Liunge [= Lynge] Sogn, Sorø Amt
Inger Marie Jacobsen 44 G Huusmoder Fodby Sogn, Sorø Amt
Christian Julius Jørgensen 0 U Barn Skelby Sogn Præstø Amt
Mette Kirstine Jensen 67 E Terslev Sogn Sorø Amt
Source: Dansk Demografisk Database.
NB: She has another child: Christian Julius Jørgensen, which they got while unmarried.
Born: 20. Maj 1869 i Skelby Sogn.
Name: Christian Julius Jørgensen.
Mother: ugift fruentimmer Inger Marie Jacobsdatter (43 years), enke efter Niels Hansen af Bidstrup.
Named father: arbejder og indsidder Jens Jørgensen af Trælløse.
Source (page 6, top): https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=21913163#429223,78548853
In 1853 she also had Hans Nielsen in Herlufmagle Sogn.
Born: 25. Oktober 1853 i Herlufmagle Sogn.
Name: Hans Nielsen.
Father: indsidder Niels Hansen.
Mother: hustru Inger Marie Jacobsdatter.
Source (page 25, bottom): https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=21883141#442167,79797146
So she had 3 children with 3 different men (only the second one - Hans Nielsen - while married)!

I just read through it all and will now get it sourced in their records. I am amazed how good you are, really. And take the time to help others. I am a trainer at the family search center (still learning trainer) and have shared your work with my fellow workers. Community is becoming an important tool for us. Thankyou again. What an important resource you are apart of in this great work. Wow what a hard and difficult life they lived.
Thankyou again. You have taught me so much. I hope I don't wear you out with my questions. Til the next one. Bless you.
