Where can I find a map of the Goslar, Bad Harzburg, Hessen areas in Germany for about 1825?
I am trying to find a small town by the name of Schimmer Kurhessen somewhere in this area. I am searching church records on archion with no luck. Thought it would be easier if I could narrow down my search more.
Thank you!

Thank you for the nice list of maps, H. M. Wagner!
Phonetic shifts are common when place names are recorded. There is no "Schimmer" in Meyers Gazetteer or other period place name lists, but there is a village called Schemmern in Kurhessen. See https://www.meyersgaz.org/place/20704019 It has an evangelical parish. The records are available on Archion, see https://www.archion.de/de/suche/?tx_sparchiondocuments_spsearch[action]=list&tx_sparchiondocuments_spsearch[controller]=Search&cHash=319ecd318aafaf37fcee3de55d0ef37d#searchResult

Thank you for the help. I searched for Schemmern in archion and found that the records began in 1830. I'm looking for 1825. Any more suggestions? Schemmern sure sounds like it could be the correct place.

You should contact the archive which holds the records (this is indicated on the Archion website). Older records may not have been uploaded yet. You could also check the FamilySearch Catalog, but note that most Protestant German church records on FamilySearch can only be viewed by Latter Day Saints. But it is also possible that the pre-1830 records have been lost. If you're looking for someone born around 1825, maybe you could find younger siblings born after 1830.

That's because in this area every little village in a parish got a separate register beginning in 1830. Prior to that time, records for all places were usually kept in the same book chronologically. Sometimes the book was divided into different sections for each village.
A good historical gazetteer for Hessen -Nassau is found on www.lagis.de. See https://www.lagis-hessen.de/de/subjects/idrec/sn/ol/id/6864 for Schemmern. This states that schemmern was a parish since the 1600s with various affiliates.
If you go to www.archion.de and search for Schemmern in the second search box "Ort/location", you get four entries for Schemmern, depending on the administrative divisions. Click on "Eschwege [[church district] - Schemmern, Gehau, Eltmannsee" . That book covers 1776 to 1831.
The book " Schemmern, Burghofen, Hetzerode, Maeckelsdorf" covers 1679 to 1776.
Beginning in 1830, each village has its own book and a separate listing.
If you search for Schemmern in the top search field [Text], all the books should come up, regardless of affiliates.
Here is the link to the book that covers 1825: https://www.archion.de/en/viewer/?no_cache=1&type=churchRegister&uid=285535
Happy hunting!

Baerbel: I am trying real hard on this, but having some difficulties. Is there any way I could get a 20 minute session with you? I am available Tuesday afternoon EST. IF that time isn't good for you, can I request you if I go through the normal channels or do I just get the next available. Thanks, Karen

We can do that.

I just saw your previous posts. Let me look at that a little more and see if we can connect the dots.

What I am actually looking for is a birth record on August Hahn. Born Jan 15, 1825. He is number L854-765 in my tree.

Hopefully I can save Baerbel a bit of work. Indeed, she gave you the correct Archion link to the church book for Schemmern in 1825. The baptism for August (born as Justus) is there - entry #2, born on the 15th of January and baptized on the 22nd. Here is the link to the page. Let me know if you need a translation.

**** - Thank you so much. Yes, please translate it for as I still can't find it. What image is it? Do you know how much work I have put into this? I know it helps to know how to read German and I try, but it's very hard for me. I saw someplace that his father's name was Johann, but I'm not sure and I know nothing about his mother. I am so very excited. Thank you again!!!

I did find it. It was in 1824 and not 1825. But yes, please translate it for me.

You are correct, it was 1824.
1824, #2
Justus, des Weisbinders Jacob Hahn & ux. Anna Catharina geb. Sippel, Sohn, geb. d. 15ten des Januars, und getauft den 24ten desselben. Gev. der Schlachter Justus Hahn von Stolzhausen.
Justus, son of the cooper Jacob Hahn and his wife Anna Catharina née Sippel, born on the 15th of January and baptized on the 24nd of the same month. Godfather was the butcher Justus Hahn from Stolzhausen.
You can find a good map of the area on Meyersgaz.org at this link. Click on the Map tab to see the map. Stolzhausen is just to the southwest of Schemmern.

I searched on the Landeskirchliches Archiv Kassel (Archive of the Protestant Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck) website for information about the church records they hold. I found a document with exactly that information. Under Stolzhausen it says that the church records for 1679 - 1830 were kept in Schemmern. However, I was not able to find the baptism of Jacob Hahn in 1790, even though his death record said he was born in Stolzhausen. I also checked the records of several other villages surrounding Stolzhausen. Here is a link to the list of church records for the Evangelische Kirche von Kurhessen-Waldeck (https://www.ekkw.de/index.php).

I looked into the history and jurisdictions of Stolzhausen a little more. The historical gazetteer said it was part of Schemmern parish, but a 19th Century book https://books.google.com/books?id=pYRajtKhCREC&pg=PA692&lpg=PA692&dq=stolzhausen+geschichte&source=bl&ots=P2mP36L4pn&sig=ACfU3U24QLJSfPxVVoaS8dFzDa7PyLEJAA&hl=de&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjN5aewgL_tAhWIZM0KHcawD0w4ChDoATADegQIBRAC#v=onepage&q=stolzhausen geschichte&f=false
said the parish was Diemerode. So I looked there. Look at this page.http://www.archion.de/p/116c9f5e05/ These are christenings and there is a Hartwig [Hertwich is a phonetic version of that name] baptism from Stolzhausen on the left and a Hahn baptism in 1790 on the right. This parish is worth checking out.

Wow, thank you so much. You found it! I will look further in this parish for siblings. This is very confusing as to where to look. I am so thankful for all the help you and your team has given me.

Thank you again Baerbel. I didn't look quite far enough around Stolzhausen.
