Anomaly reported by a Guest recently when using the New Volunteer Opportunity “Try It” link
The “Standardisation” values we can apply to Place Names in this feature of FamilySearch, are important and useful.
However, if you choose a country for checking place names, you might assume that all the records presented for standardisation would be for this chosen country.
A Guest was quite upset and disorientated recently, when finding that “Norfolk”, a county in the UK, was found to be Norfolk in Virginia in the USA, and several similar fix options.
The initial choice screen did not present any other place names for guidance, so with the choice of country being United Kingdom, she could have simply added Norfolk, England, United Kingdom.
On checking the PID in FamilySearch, a marriage entry was found for Norfolk, Virginia, United States.
The irony may be that our databases cannot assign a country value properly until standardisation is applied.
So, with this anomaly being what it is, we could say that when running these place name checks, always check the PID and open the associated person page to find more information for guidance.
If no associated information is found, on which to base standardisation, I think skipping these individual record instances would be appropriate.

Unfortunately, although, I am one of the "Leaders" of the "Group", I DO NOT have the ability to "Move" (as, I used to have; and, would like to do to), this post of yours, in this 'Group', to a more appropriate Section, in this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum; which, I suggest would be the "Ideas" ('Feedback') Section, under the 'Topic(s)' of either (or. BOTH), (1) "General User Interface"; and, (2) "Other", of this Forum.
As such ...
Can I humbly suggest that, you consider REPOSTING / RESUBMITTING this post of yours in the aforementioned.
Here are the direct links to the aforementioned.
