Alternate names for townlands
In the Tithe Applotment records of 1827 I notice a townland named Lakeland listed in County Cavan that does not appear in any of my reliable sources--in townlands.ie or in logainm.ie. Any suggestions to help me determine which townland it really is? I was guessing it had to do with Lough Oughter a series of lakes in County Cavan, but I cannot seem to find a connection. Any ideas? It's listed in Knockbride Civil Parish, but I cannot locate it there either. Thanks for your help.

I have just found this site and it has lots of great information (https://cavantownlands.com/)
In the parish you mention, they have a townland called Legland:
This townland contains 461a. 0r. 13p. statute, all cultivated with the excep- tion of 71 acres of bog, 9 acres of rough ground and 7 acres of water. The rents are from 17s. to 20s. per acre. Leases of farms -? none. The holdings are at will of landlord. It is the property of Lord Garvagh and the valuation for the Co. cess is 1s. 8d. per acre. There are no farm houses or buildings of note. The highest land is Legland trigl. station, 729 feet above the sea at low water. There is a fort in it about the centre of the townland. A communication road passes from N. to S. through centre of townland.
In 1832 the townland was called Lakeland but in Griffiths Valuation 1857 the townland was called Legland (https://cavantownlands.com/townland/?logainm_id=4536)

County Cavan has a townland named Ledonigan. If you look on googlemaps.com, there is a place called Lakeland, Ledonigan.

Just a word of warning: some of the old deeds (pre-1800) give names of the tates/farms within a townland and not the townland name itself. For example, I spent months trying to find Tatingart townland (possible nearest spellings, with lots of helpful suggestions), only to discover that it was the name of a farm in Crievehill townland. I have since found other documents by searching on the farm name rather than the townland. I now have a long list of names of places in deeds that I am still trying to locate, but I am certain that they ate tates, not townlands. Good luck! Roger
