Found no deaths for the younger of these 2.What Parishes are in the Heathfield circuit? I understand that O was often E ie ROADE and READE.

1. There are lots of Heathfields, so answering "What Parishes are in the Heathfield circuit?" isn't going to be possible straight off. 😯
2. And I don't know what you mean by "circuit" - that's a word used by Methodists, you see, much later.
3. Ringmer, however, appears only to exist in Sussex, so I will assume that it's Heathfield, Sussex, that we're talking about.

5. Google maps suggests some 11 or 12 miles between the two, so it's do-able for them to move but if it's alternate children in each parish, then it's more likely that it's two couples.

 

Now, as for "o" and "e" - well, "o" and "e" were always separate letters but the way of writing them can confuse. The letter "e" in its handwritten lower case form can look very much like "o" at first glance. What happens is that the loop often goes all the way round and results in a letter looking like the Greek Theta - "θ". Either people miss the crossbar or the crossbar is hardly there and so people often transcribe it as a letter "o". So yes, somebody could transcribe what is really "Reade" as "Roade" because the original text reads "Rθade" - or even "Rθadθ"? Usual story - you need to look at the original images and get your eye in.

1 Sorry I was not explicit. This is the first time I have used this site and limited my words not knowing if I had actually connected with you. Thought i could elaborate if I had a reply. Heathfield 2 Sussex is the county

3 What I meant by circuit is this-- What other parishes are included within Heathfield. eg When a parish record is shown under Heathfield several other parishes appear in the original record.

4 My question was about this-- Roade and Reade are they the same as I understand E looked like the letter O.

5 I am actually researching the ancestors and descendants of George Reed born 1828 Bapt at Pembury. Married Eliza Knight in London and came to first Australia then New Zealand in 1864 and was in the 4th Waikato militia.

Strictly speaking, Heathfield is a parish so cannot have any other parishes within it, by definition. Maybe you want to know what other places or other churches are covered by Heathfield parish??

 

Any parish may contain several settlements such as towns, villages or hamlets. If you look at the GENUKI link for Heathfield, the general description lists a few other settlements in the parish.

 

Any parish may contain several other churches (strictly speaking, they are chapels (aka chapels of ease, because they are easier to get to) as there is only one parish church in a parish). These chapels may or may not have their own registers. Again, the GENUKI link shows several chapels in Heathfield parish - but many of them were built after the 1600s.

 

Also people recorded in the register might have come in from outside the parish but maybe they were coming home?

 

So there are a lot of reasons for different places being mentioned in the Heathfield registers. Not sure if this helps or not!

Roade and Reade are pronounced differently.

but also keep in mind the name Roade or Reade could have been mistranscribed when indexed.

 

Never just assume that the name on an index is 100% correct.

its all based on the best guess of a person trying to read the writing

so clearly Roade and Reade - could be swapped on an index because of this.
