@JeffreyLEllison JeffreyLEllison , could you give us more information and tell us where you have already looked? What religion was he? Parents, siblings or children's names known? Did he marry in Ireland or England. If so, do you have a marriage record? Do you have him on any English census records and do you have his death record, in England, I assume? Please give us some more information so we can better help you. I suggest you check out the links on the side of the page that will teach you a lot about how to get started with Irish research.

David Thomas Ellison's religion was Christian but denomination not known. It is his parents that I am looking for. I don't know his siblings but his children were: Grace Boyd Ellison (1879-1962), David Ellison (1881-1908), William John Ellison (died 1882), Robert Thomas Ellison (1885-1968), Agnes "Nan" Ellison (1886-1977), James Montgomery Ellison (1888-1957), Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ellison (1890-1974), Mary Ellison (1893-1982), Jane "Jennie" Ellison (1894-1953), John Richardson Ellison (1896-1976), and Hanna Bryden Withers Ellison (1898-1989). All children were born in or around Distington, Cumberland, England except for his last child, Hanna who is listed as born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was married in Cumberland, Guess, England about 1878 to Grace Boyd Withers (1861-1918.) His wife was born in Dundonald, South Ayrshire, Scotland and died in New Castle, Pennsylvania, USA. I don't know if David Thomas Ellison (1857-1898) died in England or the USA where his wife died. I suspect he died in England because he is not buried with his wife (Grace Boyd Withers) in the same cemetery in the USA, Thank you for your help.

In family history research there's a basic saying that you must work from the known information to the unknown information. I know it feels frustrating, but in order to find David's parents you must back down a few to several more recent generations and build a solid foundation of info and sources.
First, to find David's parents' records you need to find David's records--his birth, marriage and death; not just dates, but info off of the original docs is critical such as location, name of church, witnesses, occupation, ages, etc. To be able to find his records you need to know his religion. There's a few ways to determine the religion of David since that is critical to know in order to research his records:
- In what church or by what minister/priest was he married and/or his children baptized? (That should be obvious on the marriage and baptism records.)
- There were not too many interfaith relationships especially if one spouse was Catholic, so what was his wife's religion? If she was from Scotland she was very possibly Presbyterian.
- What religion were his children as adults? What church did they attend? Obviously, people could change religions and did, but it was not as common to do so in that time period.
- What type of cemetery was his wife buried in? A Catholic or Protestant cemetery?
It is vital to know if he was Catholic, Church of Ireland (England) or Presbyterian to direct you where to find the records of his origins to find his parents. The records are stored in different websites.
I asked about siblings' and children's names since David's oldest son is quite possibly named after David's father according to a naming pattern often used. It's a hint, but not a guarantee to guide you in your research.
Please provide some more info from the children of David to provide clues to work back to David's parents so we can better guide you.

I have none of that information. That is why I was hoping that you might have a thread that would help me find the parents of David ThomasEllison.

I think I’m seeing this family in 1891 census for Distington, Cumberland. David Thomas is 13 born Ayrshire, Scotland. Father David Ellison is 34 a colliery labourer born, Ireland, Down. Mother Grace aged 30 born Ayrshire, Scotland. If you scroll down the siblings name, they are repeated in David Thomas’s family. Hope this helps.

Try this:
1 Using Familysearch or Ancestry find the family on the 1901 or 1891 census in
Cumberland, England. Here is the link to the FamilySearch results for the 1901 census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XSV2-GCH.
2 If this is the right family the oldest children David and Grace were born in Ayr Scotland. You can find their birth certificate on the ScoltandsPeople website. You can register on that site and do free searches. The birth certificates for these children will give you their parents names including the mother's maiden name but you do have to pay a small amount to see that information. The birth certificate should also give you the date and place the parents married. If the parents married in Scotland you can then search on ScotlandsPeople for that marriage. The marriage certificate should give you both the bride and groom's parents names including the mother's maiden name.
Good Luck

As has been pointed out always go from the known / proven to the unknown. You are / have made some dangerous assumptions which are sending you down the wrong rabbit holes.
David ELLISON married Grace WEITHERS 1877 in the registration District of Irvine in SCOTLAND. The marriage record should name both of his parents and both of her parents and their occupations. Depending upon the record keeper, it may also name where they are from. David and Grace’s address may also help to find the parents, if they went to Scotland with David. The Scottish census records may also be more specific than just county Down for the birth places in Ireland. You hope that the parents were in Scotland with David.
Grace is from Ayrshire, so her parents should be readily traceable in the 1871, then 1861, then 1851, then 1841 census. Grace WEITHERS was born 1861 in the Dundonald district so her birth will also confirm the names of the parents and give you a place. The 1861 census will tell you where her parents are from and their ages. Check the 1871 census for younger siblings, then get their birth records as after 1861 it will tell you when and where the parents were married. Alternatively find a sibling born in 1855 as that is the bonanza year for any event (birth, marriage, death).
The children David and Grace are born in Ayrshire. William is born in Workington, and the younger children are born in Distington (according to the 1891 census- need birth certificates to prove it)
In 1891 Census the family is living in ****, just south of Distington. He is listed as a colliery worker (coal miner) and I think there is a high probability that he is working at Oatlands Colliery which is just on the south side of **** (a REALLY small hamlet – blink and you are through it)
RECOMMENDED PLAN
Sign up for SCOTLANDSPEOPLE.GOV.UK and purchase some credits.
- Buy David and Grace’s marriage certificate.
- Buy the birth certificates for the two older children.
- Buy Grace’s birth certificate.
- Look for the census records for 1881 for David and Grace.
- Look for earlier census records 1871, 1861 to find Grace as a child.
- Look for earlier census records 1871, 1861 to find David as a child.
- If David’s parents are found in the census look at later census and look for death certificates
Sign up at GRO.GOV.UK/gro/content
- Purchase birth certificates of the other children as this will fill in their exact dates of birth and give you exact places of birth. Make sure you are purchasing the Digital versions of the certificates 7 pounds each. It says delivery within 10 days, my experience is that it is often faster - sometimes even overnight
I hope this helps. I am not related to these families.
Paul
