Tracing Eldridge ancestor who died in Port Elizabeth.
Hi. My great-grandfather is David Eldridge, who was born in the UK and emigrated to South Africa in the mid-1800s and died in Port Elizabeth in 1898. I have his death certificate. But I can't verify which one of two candidates from the UK was him: One is David Eldridge, christened 14/8/31 at Ellesborough, Buckinghamshire, and the other is David Eldridge born circa 1831 at East Meon, Hampshire. I've hit a brick wall, and none of my relations have any info. Both David Eldridges appear in conflicting family trees. Can anyone suggest a way forward, please? Grateful for any suggestions. Thanks, Russell.

Hi Russell,
In looking at the record it appears your David Eldridge was the one born 1831 in East Meon, Hampshire. The other David Eldridge in Buckinghamshire died in 1846 in Buckinghamshire which would rule him out. On David's death certificate does it give any indication of where he was born, or parents information? You also may try searching emgration records at https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/South_Africa_Emigration_and_Immigration

Thanks Carol. His death certificate does not record any birth details or further info. I'll check the emigration records, although I read somewhere that emigration records to South Africa during the 1800s were destroyed in the Blitz. Thanks again.
