Collaboration Question
I want to write a message to another researcher who keeps making the same mistake on one of my ancestor's person page. If I go under the "Collaborate" tab, I have two choices:Notes or Discussions. I thought one of these would stay unedited permanently unless I (the one started the Note or the Discussion) deleted or edited it. but when I went into other Notes and discussions done by others, it appeared anyone could both edit and delete Both a Note or a Discussion. Is that true or is one of them permanent so the person I am trying to correct and any others can't edit or delete it? I am trying to find a method to keep a message about my ancestor as a permanent message for others researching that same ancestor Help!

Thanks Gilbert,but I have read that and previously read the info in the new advertised blog (which has an article on the topic too). But neither article answered my specific question of whether others can just delete what I have written in the Notes or the Discussion sections under the Collaboration function. I always thought one of the two (Notes versus Discussions) could only be edited or deleted by the original author (i.e.me) and that is the one I want to use but those articles did not help me make the distinction.

One thing users cannot edit/delete are MEMORIES. You could write an article about all the research you have done/conclusions you have made and add it as a story. I also make sure to add photos of the sources to memories because they can't be deleted (sources can be deleted if they are only in the source section).

We had a similar problem in one of our lines. We put a message in all caps in the Life Sketch portion: CAUTION: PLEASE READ BEFORE EDITING INFORMATION ON THIS PERSON.
It seems to have worked. No one has changed it.

I think if you post you question on the getsatisfaction site you will get an answer as to what stays and what is editable and what can come over in a merge and what may be lost etc. There have been discussions on these questions there in the past.

I recently had this problem and after messaging this other person numerous times and calling attention to my documented sources, she still insisted that I was wrong. I ended up calling Salt Lake and they sent this problem to their special department that deals specifically with this problem. They reviewed both of our documents and found that this other person had made the mistake and how she had become 'confused'. Salt Lake contacted her and explained everything and she has now left this ancestor alone. Salt Lake was very prompt in resolving this issue.....just a matter of 4 days! I will not wait 2 years and many frustrated hours if this ever happens again. Salt Lake is there for us 🙂

Likely done, but unspoken in the above answers, is the "Watch/Unwatch" star at the top of Person pages. Be sure to click that little empty star that says "Watch" and it will turn black and say "Unwatch" (DON'T click "Unwatch" of course - that just undoes the "Watch" feature). Then whenever someone makes a change to that person in your part of the tree, you will receive timely notice and can address it quickly with the individual. That won't solve some of the problems with the somewhat more difficult people to get along with, but in many cases it will resolve things very quickly. If a change occurs, click that person's ID and message them. Or if they've been good enough to leave a phone number in their contact information as one of my "problem" situations did, a relatively brief and very friendly phone call resolved it very quickly.

Others can delete Notes, but I don't think they can delete Discussions

They didn't do this in the past. Was your ancestor an "important" person or born before 1400?

I've seen posts like that before, and I feel yelled at. This was always a new person for me. I hadn't made any mistakes, yet. Hadn't had the chance yet. I would suggest not putting it all in caps. Maybe just put the word Caution in caps . Or insert the word PLEASE at the beginning of the message and take out the other caps. It's not fun to get yelled at as the first introduction to a person.
