Do I need permission from the closest living relative to do temple ordinances?
has an example of how you might request permission.

Hi Nathan,
What I have done that has been successful is to first offer a prayer to know the right things to say and to soften the hearts of my living family. Then I explain a little bit about our beliefs about the eternal nature of families. I explain that in temples we perform special ordinances for our ancestors and other family members including sealing husband to wife and children to parents. I express my love for the deceased family member and let them know that this my way of honoring their life. I also let them know I will respect their decision.
Wishing you the best.

The only thing I would add to the above excellent answers is to perhaps tell them that is is completely the departed loved one's choice whether or not to accept what is being done for them. Let the Spirit guide and don't try to teach everything at once!

The most important thing is to pray expressing to the Lord your love for your ancestors. Then follow the prompting of the Spirit. I always to my cousins that I love my relatives.
