I have been writing life sketches for several of my ancestors. As I have worked hard to include many documents and images, I have thought a lot about my own story.
I have a story to tell. My kids have spent years with me, but they don't know so many of the behind the scenes stories. I realize the importance of writing some of these now, while I still have the details in my mind.
What would your children be surprised to learn about you?

There are many places that you can find lifestory prompts. Here is one: https://textmyjournal.com/50-questions-personal-history/
I have found that if I start writing in a word document that I can make a list of potential chapter ideas to work with. Sometimes I write down little bits of a memory. I can come back and write the whole story later.
I found that Microsoft Word will actually let me dictate my story. If I want to add commas, periods and exclamation marks, I just dictate them. Or I can just ramble and tell the story and come back and add punctuation. When I choose to write this way, I try to remember to tell Word to start a new paragraph once in awhile. Sometimes when I really get in the zone, I can actually punctuate while I am talking.
I usually start with a list of ideas:
- playing hopskotch in the street with Ginger
- playing with baby alligators
- catching rattle snakes with my Dad
- flying to New Zealand
- the sleepover at the swimming pool
- my grandparents came from England
- When granddad thought I was a hairy bear climbing in his bed
- visiting England
- my mom was sick after having a baby
- getting lost in a cave
- how come I can't be a Boy Scout?
- how I broke my arm
- and so on.....
Once I create a list and start writing, I tend to add new thoughts to my list:
- Great granddad died, why did gr grandmom comfort me? I felt bad that I cried more than she did
- Grandmom taught me to play a song on the piano
- the biggest grapefruit
- trip to the Smokey Mountains
- bears and more bears
and so my thinking goes....then I just need to start writing!
