My wife's maternal great great grandfather Giulio 0000Fiori/e (1865-1921) married Nunziatta Barboto
Her family lore was that Giulio was from a wealthy family in Rome. His father was Lodovico Fiori, his mother was Elvira Neri, and his brother was Lodovico Fiori. I have been advised that any further research on them requires my passport to gain access to the Catholic church archives in Rome. What can be done?

antenati has birth and death records found on http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/v/Archivio+di+Stato+di+Messina/Stato+civile+italiano/Alicudi/
However even though here are birth records for 1865 your great great grandfather does on appear on the indexes you can check for yourself. The surname Barboto is misspelled. The name appears in Messina as Barbato. Family stories must be proven. Most of us do not have wealthy family especially in Sicily. You need to look at each generation separately and get all records possible to show how you might be related to a family in Rome. Fiori is a common name in Italy and not all of them are related. There for you want records for Lodovico Fiori and his parents next then look for records of his parents. You do not need a passport and you do not need to write to the archives in Rome. They probably would not answer anyway. Always start with what you know and don't jump generations without full knowledge of each. Write a letter to Municipio, Comune di Lipari , Via Roma 5, Messina Sicily Italy. Ask for the birth record for Lodovico Fiori to start with. Be sure to enclose a pedigree chart showing how you are related to him. Enclose a few USA dollar bills wrapped in tin foil and very smooth (wrapped so people in the post office don't know they are there. Let us know if you get an answer from them Good luck

Thank you for your response. I have attached an English translation of their marriage document. It shows that Giulio Fiori was born in Rome to Lodovico Fiori and Elvira Neri. The document states that he was a tailor, but no one knows why he was in Lipari.
I have come across many misspellings and I will try both spellings in my research.
Thank you, again.
