Unknown grandfather - What should I do?

Since the birth of my father in 1977, his father is still unknown. Even on the birth certificate my grandfathe is unknown. My grandmother doesn't want to say anything about that topic. Is the only way to find out a DNA test or are there other ways?

If your family won't (or can't) provide you with answers, DNA is often the best path to take, especially when you know that the father's name is not listed on the birth certificate.

If you can submit your father's DNA, you might find some close family matches that you can work with. If your father is not living, or unwilling, you can still potentially find the answer using your own DNA. It is best to choose the closest person to the unknown person when you test. If your father has living siblings, it would be good to also test one of them. If they have different father's you will get important clues by comparing the differences in their matches. This will help you to determine which DNA is maternal vs paternal. They will share matches with presumably the maternal line. The DNA matches that do not match will be where you will want to focus your attention.

Tim, I am wondering if you saw my previous message. What state was your father born in?
