I need help understanding the name given to my grandfather on his birth certificate. My grandfather was born in Nantyglo, Wales in 1893 and his birth certificate lists his name as "David Windsor Cranog Davies." When the family immigrated to the US, he is on the passenger list as Cranog Davies. He has a brother that was born in Garnvach and was named John Ivor Crynant Davies. None of the other boys were given this additional middle name.

Any idea why Cranog was added to his name or Crynant added to his brother? I known Crynant is also a place name, but that isn't where he was born. I'm unaware if Cranog is also a place name. I'm attaching a copy of my grandfathers birth certificate in case that helps.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Diane

Googling Cranog provides some interesting results in Wales.

A Cranog in Welsh is a Heron. Crynant may come from Croyw and Nant which means clear brook. Quiet poetic maybe they lived near water. My daughter is Angharad which means "much loved". Her cousin is Rhodd Alaw which means gift of melody. A lot of families added names that had a special meaning to them.
