Mr. Shaber; You can also search all the Merchant Marine records we have available in FamilySearch. Click on 'Search' in your FamilySearch home page, then click on 'Catalogue'. Next click on 'subjects' and enter "Merchant Marine" (include quotes) and click 'search'. There you can access all the Merchant Marine records we have. I hope this was helpful.

It looks like United States Merchant Marine records are held at the National Archives. Check out this website for more information: https://www.archives.gov/research/military/coast-guard/merchant-marine-personnel
You can also get information about how to locate these records at NARA here: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/merchant-seamen-serving-since-1918/
Ancestry has a collection of Merchant Seaman that were lost in WWI. That collection is here: https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/60552/
You could also try a google search. Sometimes that brings up collections you didn't know existed.

His was born Sidney S Weill but he changed his surname to “DeWeel.” I don’t know when he changed it. He was born 4 April 1899 in Cincinnati Ohio. According to his prison record, he served in the Merchant Marines in the year 1918-1919. Thank you for your help. He left when my mother was two years old and she would never talk about him as at that age, she didn’t really know him.
