For Manhattan/New York City Researchers

Ten years ago, FamilySearch indexed the surviving volumes of the 1890 New York City Police Census. The US Federal Census for 1890 was lost in a fire in 1921 making the New York City census an extremely valuable tool for New York City researchers.
I was a very active indexer on the project. All my paternal great grandparents were living in Manhattan at that time.
The New York City government was not happy with the tally of the Federal census and took their own in October 1890. It is known as the Police Census because NYC constables were charged with taking the census. https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/New_York,_New_York_City,_Police_Census,1890-_FamilySearch_Historical_Records
Unfortunately, the images for the digitized microfilm are restricted to view only at FamilySearch Center. But, happily, NYC has now digitized the census, in color, and it is available to view and download on the NYC Records website.
The color images are not indexed to be searchable, but you can use the index on FamilySearch to find the Volume Number you need; sometimes the page number is also included on the FS index.

There is also a partial index, of just a few volumes, on Ancestry: https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/3519/
