Marriage Record No. 8, Sompolno Evangelical Parish, dated the 20th February 1848, of Samuel Wenzel, a widower, after death of Marianna, born Adler, who died on the 7th December 1847, he is a farmer in Bycz, born in Belny, son of Marcin and Katarzyna, born Lenc, married couple Wenzel, farmers in Belny, he is 27 years old, and of Karolina Szmydt, born Wruk, a widow after death of her husband, August Szmydt, who used to be a carpenter in Bycz, and died on the 21st January 1847, she is a daughter of Krysztof and Marianna, born Bytner, married couple Wruk, both already deceased, farmers in Drzewno (Drzewce?), where she was born, she is 26 years old and living till now in Bycz. Three Marriage Banns published in Sompolno Parish. No impediment detected. No prenuptial agreement. Witnesses: Jan Wenzel, a laborer from Wymysłowo, 29 years old, and Michal Miske, a farmer from Bycz, 41 years old.

Please have a good look at this marriage record and find the surname of mother of Samuel Wenzel. You will notice that it is very difficult to differentiate between the spelling of Lans and Lenc. Since there were no written or printed IDs at that time, and recorder wrote what he heard or perceived as correct, to establish the correct spelling of the names you will benefit from comparing the birth records of children of this couple evaluating the spellings of the maiden name of mother, also the spelling of Katarzyna’s surname in her marriage record. Check if the surname of Katarzyna is indexed in Poznan Project, basia.famula.pl, and in Geneteka.genealodzy.pl, then draw the conclusion which is most correct. But even in those indexed records the interpretation by indexers would depend on how clear was the handwriting in the record and if the recorder perceived correctly how this surname was spoken, then translated from German to Latin, Polish or Russian.

Thank-you @Eppich Maria . Why do you think in Samuel Wenzel’s 1st MR (see translation Nov 13) his mother‘s maiden name is Klingbeil and in this MR it is listed as Lenc? Scribe error? His sister Eleonora says the mother is Katarzyna Lans (Dec 18) and older sisters have the mother as Katarzyna Katz (translations Dec 13 & 15). And the MR of the parents Martin and Katarzyna was translated on Dec 16. Maybe there are different Martin Wenzels? I just don’t quite know what to make of it. But thank-you so much for all of these translations and any thoughts you may have. And Merry Christmas to you!
