Death or Marriage Record for Philipp Schuster
I have not been able to find the NYC death record for Philipp Schuster (b ~1838 Germany). The family story is that he died when my great grandmother was 3-4 years old. He was a baker and alive in 1868, 1871 and 1873. Last recorded document was his US naturalization in 1873. I assume that he died before the 1880 census, because my great grandmother was living in St. Joseph's Asylum (1880 Census in NYC) for children where at least one parent is dead.
It is no clear if he married his wife in NYC or in Germany, but without his marriage or death record, it will be difficult to find out more about him.
Any suggestions? FamilySearch Record is https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/MQ9S-9DQ

Death records that early for NYC are often just a line on a ledger sheet, not on a certificate form, and generally don't include information about the family. Those ledger sheets are not yet available on the NYC Records site. Some of them are available on FamilySearch, with images available at FamilySearch Centers only. The image quality is often poor and hard to read/index. Some are also available on Ancestry, with color images, making them much easier to read.

You can research the index from home. Then when you are at the FSC, you can access the page from your computer. But, I did a quick search and didn't see anything that looked relevant.
This is what one of those pages looks like:
Have you tried a newspaper search for a death notice or obituary?

Do I just ask at a Family History center for a ledger sheet of NYC (circa 1880) to review? But if I understand what you are implying, is that right now I am at a brick wall for this ancestor.

Interesting thought, but where do I look for a news record in the 1880s? Old Fulton postcards has a few records for NYC, Obits Archive and Legacy don't go that far back. I haven't seen anything relevant in Ancesty.

I use a variety of newspaper sources for New York City and surrounding areas: GenealogyBank, Newspapers.com, FultonHistory, NYSHistoricNewspapers.org.
