    Portrait View for large families

    Douglas McPhaden

    July 8, 2024 editado August 22, 2024 em Social Groups

    Using the larger rectangle "leaf" has pushed the display of large families over the edge of "reason"; it is no longer reasonable. Doing natural navigation becomes a real problem.

    Suggestion: Use some multiline visual device to squeeze the display (example 9WXM-77R).

      @Douglas McPhaden thank you for your feedback. It would be really helpful if you could provide a screenshot of your suggestion. Please go to How to Upload Images and follow the directions. This will help our engineers understand what you are suggesting.

      I have tried to use the workaround process to show the problem twice and failed both times. So,

      look at 9HL4-H4Y, change to portrait view. You should see lots of next generation leaves. On my screen [display diagonal is: 14.7" (37.3 cm); width x height: 12.8" x 7.2" (32.5 cm x 18.3 cm); measured by

      Display size detector - find out size of your display
      ] with zoom at 100% and no side panel, I see 9 leaves of 18. The side panel brings it down to 4/5.

      Resize the window to imagine the display using the unused space (0 data in a leaf makes it unused) space above and below. That space us not used. What is used is unavailable because it requires manual navigation.

      This has taken me an hour to prepare. Neither I nor other members of this community will make this investment for almost no return. You need to be creative/outside-the-box/precedent-challenging to come up with a different testing method.

      As a matter of interest, do you have a Human Factors Engineer reviewing your new screens. You hire these for a defined job. I found they were very helpful. No team dynamics in review process.

      Suggested policy: use space for content and icon clicks for navigation.

      @Douglas McPhaden

      Thank you for trying the workaround for the images. We understand it is not an easy process. I understand what you are describing. Since your request, others have asked for less space and more content. This has been forwarded to the engineers for review.

      We do not have a timeframe for when this will occur. Please watch the Known Issues for updates.

      @Douglas McPhaden

      Thank you so much for your patience while this was being reviewed. Your request and the request of many others for less space and more content was considered.

      Given that we need to create features compatible with all types of devices, the best solution at this time is to use the zoom function.

      Your response is narrowly focused and is contrary to facts on the ground. FamilySearch has built an entirely different for smaller devices: smart phones. Your response should be FamilySearch now has different interfaces for 2 different classes of device and does not envision commitment of resources to support more device classes. I would respond with don't give in to the hardware differences. They will change so fast you will never keep up. The only 2 classes should address the user defined classes. Lesser skilled and more skilled. Both should operate on all supported hardware that can handle each class. You have a running start with the workstation version and "app". Your suggestion is interesting and will evaluated. Thanks for participating suggestion process.

      I definitely like the new portrait tree mode, more than the horizontal landscape type. I also have an online account at Ancestry.com, and I use both of these family tree sites to verify information against the other.

      I liked. Portrait View helps you see brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces.

      I have tried the new version and I think it is very interesting. I did have some problems in the beginning, but I think it is amazing. I will like to suggest to include some dates, since they are very helpful.

      @ElsieEcheverri

      Thank you for your feedback. And thank you for working through the problems until you found it was easier to use. You asked about adding extra dates. The pedigree cards have as much information as would fit for each person. However, if you click on a person's card, it will display more information and dates about them in the side bar on the right of the chart. I hope that is helpful.
